Six of the Shamrocks teams moved on to the next round of their respective State Cups on what was a perfect day for soccer, made all the more special by some impressive goals.

None more so than Chris Burns’ first half screamer for the reserves at Randalls Island, a little less than 24 hours after his wife Allyson gave birth to their son Christian.

That dramatic D’Arpino Cup game away to the Greek Americans would eventually end 2-2 after 90 minutes, setting up a tense penalty shoot out which saw the flawless Rocks spot kick takers grind out a 6-5 victory.

On a day when the first team enjoyed a day off due to Port Jefferson Fusion’s forfeit, the reserves enjoyed top billing late Sunday but were forced to come from behind twice in order to push the game towards the shootout.

Left back Burns (pictured above) took the initiative at 1-0 down and sent a 25-yard left footed rocket to the far corner to level it with a half an hour on the clock. And after going 2-1 down against the run of play midway through the second half, the Rocks rallied impressively, allowing debuting center back Conall McGrandles to scramble home a dramatic equalizer with just five minutes to go.

The ensuing penalty shoot out witnessed brilliant finishes from Darren Coleman, Joey Aronovsky, Conall McGrandles, George Lara, Mike Stone and captain Paul McDaid before the sixth Greek kick was saved masterfully by Jesse Corke.

“I’m very proud of the way the lads never gave up,” said coach John Riordan. “The Greeks love the State Cup and were losing finalists in June in this competition so they came to play. But we responded well and kept our cool in the shootout. I’m delighted the players got a good reward for their hard work.”

Earlier in the day, the Shamrocks Women put on a great display of attacking football, knocking seven superb goals past Division B side Astoria at St Michaels.

Four goals from Chloe Wheeler (pictured above), two from Jarielle Uter and an excellent chip from skipper Teresa Ferraro decided the fate of a courageous set of opponents who, in spite of a brilliant performance from their goalkeeper, could not contend with the dominant Rocks team.

“A good result,” said coach Paddy Geraghty. “We started slow but played much better in the second half. Anna Spangler and Michaela Newell both shared a clean sheet in goals and Galway native Caroline Carter had a great debut for us. Happy to progress and to do it injury free is a great bonus.”

Sadly there was no curtain raiser at St Michaels as Shamrocks B advanced to the next round due to a CPR Red forfeit.

Meanwhile, the Shamrocks Legends took home a hard fought but well deserved 4-2 victory from their visit to Long Island’s Oceanside in the Over 30s Marth Cup courtesy of goals from Karol Hughes (two), John Riordan and captain Richie Brennan.

The home side took the lead twice against the run of play but the Legends dominated the second half and overran their younger opponents with some fine team goals.

“It was a very satisfying win because I know the players all give 100 percent and all they want to do is win,” said coach Emmett Harvey.

“There was some wonderful play and superb goals by John Riordan, Richie Brennan and a brace from Karol Hughes, making sure that we were coming away from Oceanside with a win.

“It was great to have Stevie Doyle, Ari Seidenstein and John Crowley back in action for the Legends and we were also strengthened by having Tomas Maher and Marcus Nascimento suit up.”

Elsewhere, the Over 30s began their defense of the Marth Cup in fine style, outgunning Garden City 5-1 in an electric display of soccer at Randalls Island early Sunday.

Sean Riley added two to his growing season’s tally while Alex Berne, Tayfun Gokmen and Johnny McGeeney all scored to ensure a comprehensive victory.

“We played some very good football,” reacted Paddy Mc Carry. “When the three boys up top – Johnny, Riley and Tayfun – are on form, they are hard to handle for any team. We are starting to play better and better and I’m very happy to be through to the last 16.”

Unfortunately, Shamrocks 1960 exited the Strumpf Cup at the hands of Gottschee for the second year in a row, losing 1-0 at Randalls Island.

State champions Shamrocks Over 30s begin their defense of the Marth Cup this weekend when they welcome Garden City to Randall’s Island on Sunday morning for a 10am kick off.

Paddy Mc Carry’s men sealed a memorable league and cup double back in June with a 4-2 victory over Garden City’s Long Island rivals Baisley United.

And the Donegal native has set his sights on retaining the trophy having received what he described as a “wake-up call” at home to Manhattan Celtic two weeks ago.

Mc Carry will have to plan without Jonny McGeeney, Jonny Keogh and Domnick McCartan but the squad will be at full strength otherwise.

“We are very much looking forward to Sunday’s cup game,” said Mc Carry.

“We were delighted to win it last year and we will be doing all we can to retain it.

“The loss against Celtic two weeks ago has given us a wake-up call. All the boys are focused and they know we must bring it every game. I know very little about Garden City but we will focus on our game and we will be up for it.”

The Legends are also in Marth Cup action but must head out to Long Island early Sunday for a clash with Oceanside (Merle Ave School – 9am).

Emmett Harvey’s squad has been boosted with the addition of three Over 30s players, John Crowley, Marcus Nascimento and Tomás Maher and the player-coach is hoping to bounce back after last week’s tough 4-2 defeat at home to Gjoa.

“The State Cup is a competition that we are taking seriously and we are hoping to go on a nice run,” pointed out Harvey.

“We are going out to Oceanside with a full squad and if we play the way we know we can then we’ll see where that takes us. This will be a change for us not really knowing the opposition but we will go out there to try and win.”

Meanwhile, the first team has already advanced to the second round of the Manning Cup after Long Island Soccer League outfit Port Jefferson Fusion handed the Rocks a forfeit.

“A welcome break this weekend to regroup before a big game next week,” said Kevin Grogan, reflecting on the positives ahead of next week’s huge CSL Division 1 Irish Derby clash at Lansdowne.

The squad has encountered a multitude of injuries, none more depressing than the torn ACLs suffered by defenders Anthony Tagliaferri (pictured below left) and Tommy Manz (pictured below right).

“As a club we wish Anthony and Tommy all the best,” added Grogan. “Anthony just had surgery this past week and is recovering. Unfortunately, it’s an occupational hazard. They are both still a big part of what we are doing.”

Elsewhere, in the Strumpf Cup for third and fourth division teams, Shamrocks 1960 travel to old foe Gottschee for a noon kick off at Randall’s Island 44.

Gottschee knocked the Rocks out of this competition last December after a tense penalty shoot-out brought the curtain down on a thrilling 2-2 draw.

“It’s a big game for the 1960s this Sunday,” said coach Andy Connolly.

“The Shamrocks have a long history with Gottschee, who are formidable opponents at any time. It will be nice to see how our developing squad fare in this year’s State Cup. We hope to go all the way.”

There will be a double header at St Michaels for the women’s teams who each face teams from opposite divisions.

Division A leading Shamrocks will take on lower level Astoria at 1pm buoyed by their impressive 2-0 win over league rivals Rovers last Sunday.

“We aim to continue our good form in the State Cup this week,” promised Geraghty. “It’ll be a good chance to look at some new signings and get everyone plenty of time on the field.”

And Shamrocks B face a very tough challenge from CPR Red, the only team to take points off the Rocks in Division A so far this season (St Michaels – 11am).

“The ladies have been performing well at training and they are really looking forward to getting back on the pitch after last weekend’s postponement,” said coach Keith Perez.

“It will definitely be a test for us but I expect a strong performance from our defense. Our midfield play will be key for us to come out with a victory. Being at home will definitely help and that extra support should lead to a positive result!”

The day’s action finishes late with the reserves cup clash at Randalls Island pitting the Shamrocks against the Greek Americans (kick-off 7pm).

The Greeks were 2-1 winners over the Rocks at St Michaels two weeks ago in the league but reserves boss John Riordan is looking forward to making amends for that thanks to a strengthening of the squad in the intervening period.

“The players are keen to prove themselves and build a bit of momentum for the league push too,” said Riordan.

“We didn’t get the result we deserved that night so this is a good chance to enjoy some cup football and and add to our confidence a bit more.”

Flawless from five, Rocks stay top

  • Five wins and five points clear after Irish Derby
  • Women rock Rovers and regain top spot
  • Over 30s outclass Hoboken
  • 1960 make it three wins in a row
  • Reserves send Celtic crashing

shamrocks-sunday-schedule-graphic

The Shamrocks enjoyed another successful Sunday, recording five wins out of six, each victory arriving in key league games ahead of this weekend’s slate of State Cup round one showdowns.

The first team moved to 5-0 and 15 points at the top of CSL Division 1 thanks to an Irish Derby success at Manhattan Celtic; the women’s team went top of Division A after their top of the table clash away to erstwhile leaders Rovers; the reserves and Over 30s rediscovered the winning feeling at a crucial time and Shamrocks 1960 gleaned all three points from their home game against top Metro 1 team Korabi.

The first division game was settled early, a strike each from Damian Lopez and captain Zachary Gosse in the first half arriving after well-executed set pieces – both players scoring their maiden goals for the club.

With second-placed Pancyprians winning and third-placed Lansdowne surprisingly held to a draw by newly-promoted Doxa, Kevin Grogan’s side stays five points clear at the top of Division 1

A free kick from the right by Giuseppe Barone found Charlie O’Loughlin at the back post who headed the ball back across the box to where center forward Lopez was ready to pounce with a close range effort with just five minutes on the clock.

O’Loughlin set up the second goal too, getting his head on to another set piece almost assisting Lopez for the second time, his close range header rebounding back to Gosse who headed home.

“Very satisfied with a win,” said coach Kevin Grogan whose team could well have been three goals to the good had Kwesi Mills-Odoi converted a second half penalty.

“In saying that, it was a poor game of football. On the bright side, we didn’t concede and I’m very happy with that. Satisfied to keep the run going. We are enjoying riding the wave. A nice break from the league now next week when we play Port Jefferson Fusion in the State Cup.”

The reserves got back to winning ways, meanwhile, with a superb 3-1 victory in the curtain raiser.

Alex Wasilewski put the Rocks ahead midway through the first half with a clinical finish set up by Joey Aronovsky.

The home side were let back into it during a scrappy period in the second half but the Rocks rallied back to true form and rounded out the game with well worked goals. Chris Burns’ brilliant low drive from outside the box, his third of the season, put the Rocks in front with ten minutes to go and then Sean O’Neill made sure of the points with a close range finish after a great move.

“We earned that,” said coach John Riordan. “We need to be more clinical in front of goals but we showed great character to get ourselves back into it and finally round out a game like I know we can. Hopefully some injuries clear up now and we’ll be really able to find our stride.”

Elsewhere in Metro 1, Shamrocks 1960 were 1-0 up over Korabi in St Michaels when the away side walked off the field with 15 minutes to go due to a disagreement with the referee.

Dave Harvey’s first half goal, a low drive to the bottom corner from just inside the box, was just reward for a dominant display overall, one which was inspired by returning midfielder Ciaran Moloney.

“A massive win for us,” said assistant coach Neil Mannion.

“It puts us back in the title race. When we put it all together we can beat anyone and that showed today. Former ‘Special One’ Robbie O’Neill’s presence on the sideline frustrated the opposition and led to them walking off the field.”

Earlier in the day, the Shamrocks Over 30s got back on the winning side of things with an impressive 2-0 win over Hoboken thanks to goals from Peter Hatzer and Sean Riley.

“I’m extremely happy with our win today,” said Paddy Mc Carry.

“Defensively, we were excellent and all the boys put in a real shift in very difficult conditions. It was just the response we needed after our first loss. Peter and Sean took their goals very well. Today was a real squad effort.”

In the St Michaels curtain raiser, the Legends came unstuck against Gjoa, losing 4-2 in driving rain.

Two impressive first half goals from Brendan Donoghue had the Rocks confident but a turning point arrived when the sides were level at 2-2 – man of the match Eoghan McParland was taken down in the box and Karol Hughes scored the resultant penalty. But the referee ordered it retaken and his subsequent effort rebounded back off the post.

“A very frustrating loss,” admitted assistant coach Eoin Sweeney.

“It was a mix of missed opportunities and a penalty hitting the post combined with silly basic errors for two of their goals. That doomed us to a tough loss. Losing Tyrone Kent with a hamstring injury early in the first half disrupted the midfield flow.

“We need to do the basics properly to advance as a team. We move on to the State Cup next week with hope and optimism and use this game as a further learning curve for our improving team.”

The fifth victory of the day was also secured early as the Division A top of the table clash between the Rocks and Rovers ended in a 2-0 win for Paddy Geraghty’s charges.

Teresa Ferraro (below left) and Erin Cullen (below right) were both on the mark, helping to send their side back to the top of the division in fine style.

“Very satisfying win today,” said Geraghty.

“We reacted from last week’s draw to raise it back up to the standard we expect. It was tough conditions but we battled and showed we wanted it more.”

The Division B game away to NYC United B was postponed due to rain.

All coaches are now looking ahead to next Sunday’s State Cup games which will be a nice break from the league campaigns. With three home games and four away games, it will be yet another busy day for the Rocks!

Irish Derby for league leading Rocks

  • Celtic host Rocks in Met Oval showdown
  • 1960 face tough test from Korabi
  • Over 30s seeking return to winning ways
  • Top of the table clash for Division A women

shamrocks-sunday-schedule-graphic

The CSL Division 1 leaders will make the short journey to the Met Oval on Sunday for what should be a tense and tough Irish Derby against Manhattan Celtic (4pm kick-off).

Shamrocks captain Zachary Gosse will return to the fray after missing last weekend’s 1-0 win against the Greek Americans while Jamie Clarke is also back available after serving a one-game suspension for the two yellow cards picked up against Cedar Stars.

Gosse said that his team mates have not let their strong start to the season cause them to get carried away, each of the players following the ‘one game at a time’ mantra of their coach, Kevin Grogan.

“It’s a great feeling getting 12 points from four matches,” admitted Gosse. “However, it’s a long grueling season that requires everyone from the club to maintain our focus and desire to win.

001-zachary-gosse

Shamrocks captain Zachary Gosse will return to the line-up this weekend. Picture: Dennis Schneidler.

“The league format has us playing each team twice this year so it’s important not to get too high after a win, because we’ll eventually see the same team again before the end of the season.”

Mid-table Manhattan Celtic won their opener against Polonia Gwardia before pushing champions Lansdowne hard in a 1-0 defeat. They arrive into this showdown off the back of a highly impressive 1-1 draw at home to Pancyprian Freedoms.

“It should be a great atmosphere!” Gosse added. “The Met Oval is not only a beautiful, but historic venue for soccer in the United States. I spent three seasons playing PDL for the Brooklyn Knights, so it’s a bit of a homecoming for me.”

Grogan is also hoping that Laurie Child will be back available while Micky McGreevy returned to training this past week. However, injuries to Tom Manz and Rafa Carpes are a cause for concern.

“Derby games carry a bit more emotion,” said Grogan. “But ultimately we need to detach ourselves from emotion and focus on the game and not the occasion.

002-kevin-grogan

Rocks boss Kevin Grogan

“We very much respect Manhattan Celtic and what they have achieved. Win, tie or lose we will shake hands after the game and wish them the best for the future.”

The Shamrocks Reserves, meanwhile, have a lengthy injury list which will once again leave them short handed in defense.

Timmy Fetherston, Joe Kennedy, and Sean Steed are all major doubts while work and family commitments will mean coach John Riordan will be without the services of Nikle Guzijan, Mitchell Jones, Mike Stone and Leo Nizzi.

On the plus side, Johnny Hayes, Brendan Lane and Larry Slaughter are all back available for the 2pm game against a team that has won one and lost two of their games so far.

“We’re looking forward to the game,” said Riordan. “Celtic always play good football so it will be a great test of our lads. We’re not making any excuses about the two defeats we’ve suffered over the last ten days and we’re just focusing on getting back to winning ways.”

This weekend’s double header at St Michaels will see a match-up of Shamrocks 1960 and Korabi in Metro 1 action at 1pm along with the Legends’ clash with Gjoa at 11am.

Emmett Harvey has called on the Over 37s to capitalize on a good run of form for the earlier game as high-flying Gjoa have enjoyed a good start to the season with three wins and one loss.

“After two really good wins in a row we hope to carry the momentum into Sunday’s game,” said Harvey.

“Although we are still missing a few players through injury, we have a few key players returning. We are playing some good football lately and the most important thing is everyone is really enjoying it.”

Rocks 1960 will face a tough challenge from Korabi who won each of their September games but suffered a tough loss against Lansdowne last Sunday.

“We’re confident now after getting two wins under our belt,” said assistant coach Neil Mannion. “Korabi are a top team in this division so we are fully aware of the challenge but if we click, we can present problems to any team.”

Elsewhere, Paddy Mc Carry is hopeful that the Over 30s can bounce back from last week’s defeat at home to conference leaders Manhattan Celtic when they take on Hoboken at Randall’s Island 75 at 8am on Sunday morning.

“Sunday’s game is a big one for us,” admitted Mc Carry. “Last week we did not play well and were missing quite a few starters and Celtic ran out worthy winners in the end. Players will have have to step up to the plate Sunday because we are missing quite a few with the long weekend. This is their chance to impress.

“We will be without our star striker Tayfun Gokmen for a while. He took a serve hit on Sunday to his knee. That’s a massive blow for us as he is one of the best players in the league. We wish him a speedy recovery. We are though boosted by the return of Sean Riley, Pablo Graham and Jonny Keogh.”

In the Metropolitan Women’s Soccer League, there will be an intriguing battle of the top two teams at East 6th St where second placed Shamrocks face off against leaders Rovers at 9am.

Paddy Geraghty’s charges slipped up last Sunday against last-placed CPR Reds, conceding a late goal to share the spoils, so this weekend he is hoping for a positive response from his players.

“Rovers have some quality players but we had a good session on Tuesday and we’ll be ready to go,” noted Geraghty. “We’re missing a few players this week but still have a solid squad of 14 so we expect a very good performance.”

Later at Randalls Island 82, Shamrocks B face a late afternoon showdown away to joint-leaders NYC United with both teams playing for the chance to be top of the table going into next weekend’s rounds

“The importance of this game was stressed at training and the ladies are committed to the club and to each other,” said coach Keith Perez.

“Standing behind this commitment and backed by the continued successful results, I expect the ladies to put in a strong performance. Come on out and support the Rocks!”

State Cup draws released

The Shamrocks have been drawn away to Port Jefferson Fusion in the Manning Cup.

The reserves visit the Greek Americans in the D’Arpino Cup.

In the Strumpf Cup, Shamrocks 1960 will play at Gottschee.

And in the Marth Cup, champions Shamrocks Over 30s will host Garden City and the Legends will travel to Oceanside.

The draw for the Women’s State Cup was made last week and both of our teams secured home advantage.

Our Division A side will face Astoria of Division B at St Michaels (1pm) and our Division B team will face a tough challenge from CPR Red at the same venue with a kick-off of 11am.

All games take place on Sunday October 16.

Rocks move five points clear

  • Diaby on target again as Grogan’s men outgun Greeks
  • Wins for 1960 and Legends
  • Women held by CPR Red

shamrocks-sunday-schedule-graphic-1Ibrahim Diaby’s superbly struck first half free kick was enough to clinch another CSL Division 1 victory for the Shamrocks on Saturday night.

But Kevin Grogan was quick to look ahead to next Sunday’s Irish Derby after this 1-0 success over the Greek Americans at St Michaels.

Down several regulars, the Rocks struggled to finish off the game in the second half in spite of being the superior team.

Diaby stepped up to the 20-yard set piece halfway through the first half and clinically dispatched his right footed effort over the wall and into the far corner.

The result pushed the Rocks further clear at the top, five points ahead of Pancyprians who were held to a 1-1 draw on Sunday by the Rocks’ next opponents.

“Big week ahead and a big game Sunday against Manhattan Celtic,” said Grogan. “We’ll be happy to have Jamie, Zachary and Laurie back available. It’s one game at a time as always.”

Saturday’s curtain raiser brought about another tough defeat for the reserves who rallied back from 1-0 down thanks to an Alex Wasilewski goal only for the Greeks to score a late winner on the break and against the run of play.

“We deserved a draw for the way we played in the second half,” said coach John Riordan. “We were missing a lot of players through injury and family commitments but the 11 lads that went out there fully did themselves justice and hopefully they’ll start to get the rewards for their efforts sooner rather than later.”

Meanwhile in Sunday’s games, there were wins again for Shamrocks 1960 and Shamrocks Legends, moving both teams on to six points out of a possible 12 in their respective divisions.

The Metro 1 game at Mola in the Verrazano Sports Complex finished 2-0 in favor of Andy Connolly’s 1960 side, pushing them up to fifth place in the standings.

“This was another tidy display from the 1960s,” said Connolly. “There was great communication and linked-up play across the team, and the absence of a noted keeper did not prove fatal. A great comeback performance from Ruairi Lavery and Joey Flynn bossed the midfield with grace. Paul McGinley did well both in goals and out field. Robbie Kennerney and Craig Glynn terrorized their defense.”

Tyrone Kent was the match winner for the Legends whose 1-0 win away to Barnstonworth moved Emmett Harvey’s men up to level on points with third placed Eintracht.

“After getting off to a tough start this campaign, we have settled in and we are now playing some great football,” said Harvey. “We kept a clean sheet and everyone really battled out there against a tough and well organized Barnstonworth Rovers team.

“Two wins in a row feels good and everyone is really enjoying their football, Some outstanding play from Tyrone Kent and as always our captain Richie Brennan was outstanding once again.”

The Shamrocks Over 30s long run without defeat came to a disappointing end with a 4-1 defeat at home to Manhattan Celtic. Bingo O’Driscoll was the first half goalscorer for the Rocks.

In the Metropolitan Women’s Soccer League, there was a 1-1 draw for the Rocks in Division A at CPR Red while the Division B encounter at home to Sirens ended up as a forfeit in favor of the Rocks, moving Keith Perez’s charges on to nine points and a share of first place.

Jackie Gawne had the Division A side ahead early at East 6th Street but CPR Red battled well and leveled the game late on, grabbing a much needed point to kick start their campaign.

“It was a tough day for us,” admitted coach Paddy Geraghty. “After a first half where we didn’t get started, we played much better in the second half. I thought we’d done enough to win it but they scored from a direct free kick with four minutes left. Sometimes you just have to credit your opponents and they played brilliantly. They deserved the point for the effort they showed.”

Irish Derby for Over 30s, league leading first team set to host Greeks

  • Mc Carry looks to extend unbeaten run
  • Greeks visit Rocks for St Michaels double header
  • Geraghty’s sights set on CPR
  • Legends looking for second win
  • 1960 travel to Mola in repeat of 2015 Saunders Cup decider

shamrocks-sunday-schedule-graphic

Although we’re only getting into October, Sunday’s Over 30s Division Irish Derby is already a significant one.

The top-of-the-table clash between the Shamrocks and Manhattan Celtic Legends at St Michaels pits two 3-0 sides against each other with an outright lead of the East conference on the line.

“This is our biggest game since the State Cup final,” admitted coach Paddy Mc Carry.

“We face a very good Manhattan Celtic side who along with Manhattan Kickers are our main threats if we want to win the East. It’s a must-win game. We will be without Sean Riley and Eugene Reynolds which is a massive blow for us because they are quality players. I am also waiting to hear if Jonny Mc Geeney and Johnny Keogh are available.

“But we’re boosted by the return of our captain Bingo O’Driscoll. We have a good squad and I have no doubt the players will be up for this game but make no mistake about it, this is a severe test for our boys.”

There will be a similarly tough test the night before at the same venue for the first team whose lengthening injury list is already testing the depth of carefully assembled Kevin Grogan squad.

The league leading Rocks welcome the Greek Americans to St Michael’s for an 8pm kick off and must plan without several key players while also hoping others are fit enough in time for what could yet prove to be an important showdown.

Captain Zachary Gosse (toe), midfielders Rafa Carpes (hip flexor), Ibrahim Diaby (glute) and Giuseppe Barone (ankle), defender Laurie Child (rib), top goalscorer Kwesi Mills-Odoi, and both goalkeepers Frankie Tsasse (knee) and Hector Guerrero-Medina (wrist) are all major doubts. And after picking up two yellow cards away to Cedar Stars last week, Jamie Clarke must sit out this weekend.

Laurie Child (above left) and Rafa Carpes are both injury worries.

This is a vital one for the Greeks who failed to win either of their opening games, both against Greek rivals. They began with a 0-0 draw at Doxa and followed up with a 3-1 defeat at home to Pancyprians.

“We didn’t envisage having quite so many injuries,” said Grogan. “Now it’s about injury management and squad rotation. It doesn’t disrupt us to a great degree but it does unsettle the balance of the team.

“It means now that we have to look at improvisation in terms of formation and player positions. This is why we have a big squad. We have quality so we go into Saturday with a winning mentality.”

Last Sunday’s game against Cedar Stars was forfeited in favor of the Shamrocks due to an incident late in the game involving a Cedar Stars player. The Shamrocks Soccer Club was not involved in this disciplinary process at any point and will be making no further comment on the situation.

The Rocks Reserves suffered their first loss of the season away to Zum Schneider on Wednesday night but now have an immediate opportunity on Saturday to recover from a barnstorming 5-4 defeat.

Two Alex Wasilewski goals and a Darren Coleman strike had John Riordan’s side three goals up after 30 minutes but Zum rallied back to 3-2 to steady the ship. However, Joey Aronovsky’s stunning strike from the edge of the box opened out the Shamrocks lead again before the half.

Darren Coleman (above left) and Joey Aronovsky scored their first goals of the season.

The opening 20 minutes of the second half saw Zum take control, scoring three dramatic goals to edge back in front. In spite of their best efforts, the Shamrocks could not draw level and the league leaders secured all three points.

“It was a great effort by all the players,” said Riordan. “We played some fantastic football at times and we were very unlucky that a few breaks went their way in the second half. But they are a good team and it was always going to be a tough game.

“We have a couple of players back from injury on Saturday and the lads are looking forward to getting this loss out of their system.”

Meanwhile, in Metro 1 action, bottom side Mola will host Shamrocks 1960 at the Verrazano Sports Complex, a repeat of the 2015 Saunders Cup final which went the way of the Rocks reserves (kick off 1pm).

1960 go into this one confident after last week’s impressive home win over Deportivo Sociedade but a major setback for goalkeeper Robbie O’Neill (knee injury) leaves the Rocks without their legendary stopper.

“Big game and looking to take momentum from last week forward,” said coach Andy Connolly. “The squad is really developing with the strength of new players inspiring the likes of Harvey, Hughie, Emeka and Kevin Farrell to really up their games.”

Elsewhere, Barnstonworth Old Boys will serve as the opposition for the Shamrocks Legends who also eked out their first win of the season last weekend (Bush Terminal – 12pm).

Barnstonworth are unbeaten thus far, with a win and two draws to their name, but Legends coach Emmett Harvey said his players were looking forward to the game in Brooklyn.

“If we play the way we did against Manhattan Celtic then I’m confident we can get a good result,” he added. “The players are all committed and we are all really enjoying playing together as a team.”

In the Metropolitan Women’s Soccer League, the Shamrocks teams will be hoping to continue their impressive win streaks in games that kick off at the same time in Manhattan and Queens.

Winless CPR Red host the Rocks in a Division A showdown at East 6th St in what will be clash of sides sitting at opposite ends of the standings (kick off, 11am).

However, Paddy Geraghty, who has watched his side rack up three impressive wins without conceding a single goal, is not taking anything for granted heading into this one.

“We face a talented team on Sunday in CPR and we’re missing 5 players so it’s a big test for us,” he pointed out.

“But we’ve built a squad to deal with it and it’s a chance for others to stay in the team with a good performance. Tara Kiernan has been added to the squad after her great performances for our B team and we also welcome new signing Ashley Starks.”

In Division B, the Shamrocks welcome old foe Sirens to St Michael’s for an 11am kick-off. Last year’s runners-up, Sirens, have failed to win either of their two games but will be keen to get one over on the team that outdid them in the league race last season.

“The players are getting comfortable with each other and their roles on the field,” observed Rocks coach Keith Perez. “They’re presenting a strong presence on both sides of the ball. I am expecting a similar performance to last week with continued communication and possession. Come on out and support the Rocks!”

Sunday was almost the perfect day but it would be a difficult to imagine how it could have been better for the Shamrocks.

After Rocks teams rattled off six wins from six across the city, the first team headed to the Bronx for the toughest tie of the day.

Kevin Grogan’s men started brilliantly and took an early lead at the home field of last year’s league finalists Cedar Stars Academy, Kwesi Mills-Odoi scoring his third goal in three games to give the visitors a surprise lead.

Kwesi Mills Odoi scored his third goal in three games.

But the talented home side drew level superbly before half-time, setting up an entertaining second half where either side could have snatched all three points.

“This was a big result against one of the top two teams in the league,” pointed out Grogan afterwards.

“It was a bizarre game but the players managed it very well. Many injuries but injury management is part and parcel of the game.”

Chris Burns surged to the top of the goalscoring charts for the reserves with his second strike in two games, a late winner that handed his side a deserved 1-0 victory in the opener.

After dominating possession and peppering the CSA goal, it was the veteran defender who settled the issue after central midfielder Johnny Hayes’ volley careened back off the crossbar.

“I’m delighted with the result particularly since we were missing a couple of players through injury,” said coach John Riordan.

“We have a quick turnaround now to the replay of the game against Zum Schneider (Wednesday, Randalls 70, 9pm) and they have had a couple of very impressive results so we will need to be on our toes.”

Center back Joe Kennedy helped the reserves to their second clean sheet in a row.

Meanwhile, Shamrocks 1960 got off the mark with their first win and first goals of the season thanks to a 4-2 success at home to Deportivo Sociedade.

Craig Glynn scored twice while a Dave Harvey penalty and a goal from Michael Kumaresan made sure of the points for Andy Connolly’s side against their winless opponents.

“Great win and sets us back on track,” said Connolly. “The new players are gelling with rest of the squad. Great performance from Craig and Harvey was man of the match. He’s a greater leader in his new midfield role.”

A Ger Shivnan brace helped the Legends get their season up and running, inspiring a very impressive 4-1 win at home to Manhattan Celtic in the Over 37 Division Irish Derby.

Back row, from left to right, Brian Wolohan, Tyrone Kent, Justin Stanford, Joe Connolly, Robbie Walsh, Emmett Harvey, Ger Shivnan, Eoin Sweeney. Front row, left to right, Randall Friedman, Richie Brennan, Eoghan McPartland, Ducky Kelly, Eddie Gilmartin, Mateo Stiglich.

The away side took the lead but Tyrone Kent deservedly got the scoring underway for the Rocks with a good finish from the edge of the box. Shivnan’s first was a header into the far corner while his second was set up by Eoghan McParland, allowing the big Roscommon forward to fire the ball to the far corner from the edge of the box. Assistant coach Ducky Kelly scored the superb fourth, a dinking shot over the advancing keeper.

“It was great to get our first win of the season against a good side in Manhattan Celtic,” said coach Emmett Harvey.

“We played brilliantly as a team and worked hard throughout the game. Ger Shivinan, Tyrone Kent and Donal “Ducky” Kelly all took their goals superbly.

“I can’t single out any individual player for man of the match as everyone played their part brilliantly. This win takes the pressure of Eoin Sweeney once again.”

Earlier Sunday, the Over 30s hammered Megas Alexandros 9-2 and will look ahead to next Sunday’s top of the table clash against Manhattan Celtic with confidence.

Sean Riley and Johnny McGeeney both scored twice and there were also goals from Tayfun Gokmen, Shawn Baron, Dominick McCartan and the Brazilian pairing of Marcus Nascimento and Leo Coimbra.

“Three wins without a loss to start the season, we are very happy with that,” said coach Paddy Mc Carry.

“We did not start great and made a couple mistakes which resulted in their two goals but after that we settled down and we were fantastic in the second half.

“All 18 of the squad played so that was pleasing. We have attacking players who are brilliant and when they are on song, we score a lot of goals and cause teams a lot of trouble. So it was very good day at the office for us.”

In the Metropolitan Women’s Soccer League, there were excellent wins in Division A and B for both of the Rocks teams.

An early start at Randall’s Island saw Paddy Geraghty’s Division A team beat the Manhattan Kickers on a resounding scoreline, 4-0.

13 goals in three games now and Chloe Wheeler’s stunning volley set the tone. As with last Sunday’s 8-0 win, Wheeler was joined once again on the scoresheet by Georgia Frost (pictured below left), Sinéad Hennessy and Jarielle Uter (below right).

“A strong performance on Sunday against a good Manhattan Kickers team,” said coach Paddy Geraghty.

“They caused us trouble from set pieces but our fitness told in the end and we could have had six or seven. We’re coming into the tough part of our schedule in October so hopefully we stay healthy and give it our best.”

The Women’s B team enjoyed an impressive success over Manhattan Kickers/Phoenix. Anastasia Hagan’s opener was followed by a Paige Osborne double that sealed the points for Keith Perez’s charges.

“We are really coming together as a unit,” admitted Perez.

“The ladies moved as a team and implemented tactics learned at training to dominate possession the entire game. We outplayed the Manhattan Kickers at every position and I am very proud of the the performance they put together. If we continue to play at that level, this can be a very successful season.”

O’Loughlin return boosts Rocks

  • Tough test at Cedar Stars for first team
  • Joey Zorbo named Reserves assistant coach
  • Over 30s bid to continue unbeaten streak
  • Women hoping for three from three
  • Legends/1960 double header at St Michaels

shamrocks-sunday-schedule-graphicJust in time for the tough away trip to the Bronx to face Cedar Stars Academy this weekend, first team boss Kevin Grogan has received a huge boost this weekend with the return of defensive stalwart Charlie O’Loughlin.

The towering center back has impressed since joining the Rocks from Hoboken and will likely rejoin captain Zachary Gosse at the heart of the defense with last year’s player of the year recovering this week from the gashed shin he sustained during last week’s win at home to NYAC.

It was announced earlier this month that the former Westchester Everton Eagles would now fall under the banner of NJ-based Cedar Stars Academy subject to the terms of an initial year-long deal. The Eagles were Division 1 finalists last season and have added good talent to their already strong ranks.

“Charlie is back which is a big plus for the squad,” said Grogan.

“We will make a decision last minute on (midfielder) Giuseppe Barone (ankle) and unfortunately Eric ( Hamstring and groin ) will most likely be unfit to play.

“This will be our toughest test but we are capable of playing anyone this season. I’ve said it before, we will get better each week. Jamie Clarke came into his own during the second half last week and caused trouble. My shirt is already ironed for Sunday. I cant wait!”

Meanwhile, John Riordan has appointed first team player Joey Zorbo as his assistant coach for the reserves team ahead of Sunday’s trip to the Bronx. And in further good news for the squad, captain Paul McDaid (pictured below) returns after a weekend away as will veteran defender Nikle Guzijan and last season’s top scorer Darren Coleman. There will also be a debut for highly rated goalkeeper Jesse Corke.

dsc_3052“i’m delighted Joey has accepted the role,” said Riordan. “He has been a brilliant addition to the club and he offers great energy and insight. I’m looking forward to working with him and with the mood in the camp very positive, he can be a natural fit.

“Unfortunately, Timmy Fetherston is still out with an injury and Brendan Lane has picked up a knock but we have a strong squad Sunday and we’re looking forward to it.”

It was also confirmed during the week that the CSL Arbiter overturned a referee’s decision to forfeit a league game between the Rocks reserves and their Zum Schneider counterparts on the opening day of the season. The Zum coaches did not provide roster sheets in time for the kick off and it was temporarily designated as a forfeit. However, this was reversed and the game was rescheduled to next Wednesday evening (Randalls Island 70, 9pm).

Sunday will begin with the dominant Rocks Over 30s heading to Williamsburg for an 8am game at Megas Alexandros as coach Paddy Mc Carry aims to extend the incredible unbeaten run which reached 30 games last weekend.

“We’re looking to stay unbeaten and keep a clean sheet,” said Mc Carry.

“We have set a goal to be top of the East division by the time the winter break rolls around. To achieve that goal, we must take care of business against Megas. Celtic are also unbeaten and we play them next week but we must get Sunday out of the way first.

“We have a full 18-man squad to chose from. There a few of the boys away but we have a lot of strength in depth this year. We also are very proud of our 30 game unbeaten streak and we want to keep adding to it!”

The Legends and Rocks 1960 will enjoy a St Michaels double header on Sunday with Deportivo Sociedade visiting for a Mtero 1 game at 1pm following the Over 37s Irish Derby between Emmett Harvey’s men and Manhattan Celtic Masters.

Deportivo have renamed from the team formerly known as Metro City Fury and, as with the Rocks, have yet to win this season, recording a scoreless drw against Croatia in their opener.

“This is D-Day for the 1960s,” admitted coach Andy Connolly. “We have to barrage the opposition with all we have on Sunday and hope to secure a beach head in this league. Should we do so, we’ll be marching under the Arc de Triomphe by Christmas.”

In the opener, the Legends will also be looking for their first points of the season as will their derby rivals, Manhattan Celtic.

“After what has been a tough start to the season, we are hoping to bounce back at home this weekend,” said coach Emmett Harvey.

“Although we are missing a few key players through injuries and suspensions, we move forward and will do our best to pick up some points this weekend.”

Elsewhere, Rocks Women coach Paddy Geraghty is aiming to make it three wins from three when his charges line out on Randalls Island 82 at 10am against Manhattan Kickers/Scala.

“We have the chance to stay top of the league so it’s a big incentive for us,” said coach Paddy Geraghty. “Two of our biggest rivals play each other this week so we have to take advantage of points dropped elsewhere.”

Later at East River Park, the B team will also face Manhattan Kickers/Scala who merged over the summer with Phoenix (3pm kick-off).

Coach Keith Perez is seeking to build on last weekend’s maiden victory and has called on his players to build momentum.

“With some new players and a strong commitment from team veterans, we will be showcasing a well balanced line up at all positions,” Perez said. “It would be a huge boost if we could get some support as we aim to pick up victory number two!”
