WEEKEND RESULTS

  • NY Shamrocks 0 NY Ukrainians 1
  • NY Shamrocks Reserves 3 NY Ukrainians Reserves 1
  • Barnstonworth Premier 1 NY Shamrocks Over 30s 2
  • Manhattan Kickers 0 NY Shamrocks Women 1

Sunday brought three wins from four for the Shamrocks as the women’s team earned their first ever victory thanks to a goal from Sarah Thorenton, her strike helping the Rocks to a 1-0 win in Williamsburg against Manhattan Kickers.

Earlier in the day, the first team were unlucky to lose 1-0 at home to the Ukrainians. Going down to nine men in the first half, they battled well but the Ukrainians scored against the run of the play in the second half.

The Ukrainians go top now, level on points with the Shamrocks but with a better goal difference and a game in hand.

Stevie Doyle’s reserves extended their lead at the top of Division 2 with a superb win over the Ukrainians in the curtain raiser.

The away side opened the scoring after 20 minutes when a free kick deep into the box was met by a header which crashed off the cross bar and in.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

But the Rocks responded well and after a period of pressure, Braden Ruddy (pictured right) beat the keeper to head home from 12 yards.

Five minutes into the second half, Shamrocks took the lead when Leandro Fregossi squared low to Paul McDaid who tapped the ball home with ease.

Substitute Dan Meola extended the lead soon after coming on when he wished the ball in from the right and struck the ball home after the keeper parried it back to him.

In the late game Sunday evening, the Over 30s beat Barnstonworth Rovers 2-1. Goals from Sean Riley (below left) and Tayfun Gokmen (below right) gave Paddy Mc Carry’s men seven wins from seven in the league, five points ahead of Manhattan Celtic with a game in hand.

They will face a very stiff test next Sunday against Manhattan Kickers who are top of the West Division.

The firsts and reserves also face two more crucial games against title rivals with a trip to the Bronx to take on Sporting Astoria whose reserves are second behind the Rocks (Evander Childs High School, 8pm/6pm).

In-form NY Ukrainians bid to topple Rocks

WEEKEND SCHEDULE

CSL Division 2 (& Reserves)
NY Shamrocks v NY Ukrainians, St Michael’s Playground, 1pm (11am)
CSL Over 30s
Barnstonworth Premier v NY Shamrocks, Randall’s Island 74, 8pm
Metro Women’s League
Manhattan Kickers v NY Shamrocks, McCarren Park, Williamsburg, 8pm

The Shamrocks may be in control of the top spot in Division 2 but Glen Wrafter’s men will face tough opposition this Sunday when second placed NY Ukrainians visit St Michael’s Playground at 1pm.

The Ukrainians haven’t lost in the league since the opening day of the season and lie just three points behind the Rocks in the standings.

But after a perfect October in which the Rocks won all four games, scoring 21 goals in the process, they will be hopeful of getting off to a good start in November.

During the week it was confirmed that the next round of the State Cup will take place in Yonkers with the first team taking on EDSL side South Stars (Cook Park, Sunday november 16, 2pm).

Meanwhile, Stevie Doyle’s reserves will also face a stiff test against their Ukrainian counterparts who have enjoyed a decent start to the season. They did however draw 1-1 last Sunday at home to struggling Manhattan Kickers in a shock result.

Later on Sunday, the Shamrocks Over 30s will be seeking to protect their 100% league record when they take on Barnstonworth Rovers Premier at Randall’s Island 74 (8pm).

The two sides met in the State Cup two weeks ago, a game which resulted in the Rocks exiting the competiton so Paddy Mc Carry will be hopeful of learning some lessons from that tie.

Elsewhere, it will also be a late kick-off for the women’s team who play Manattan Kickers/Scala in McCarren Park (Williamsburg) at 8pm.

  • NY Shamrocks Reserves 1 NY Supreme 0
  • NY Shamrocks Over 30s 2 Greek Americans 0
  • Astoria 1 NY Shamrocks Women 1

It has been a perfect October for the NY Shamrocks, their 6-1 win over NY Supreme at St Michael’s on Sunday keeping them well in control at the top of Division Two.

A fourth win overall this month – three in the league and one in the State Cup – keeps Glen Wrafter’s men firing on all cylinders.

Mohamed Fofana scored twice while left back Chris Burns (pictured right) notched his first of the season in a game dominated by the Rocks from start to finish.

Fofana scored the opener, rounding the keeper skillfully to slot home in the 10th minute.

The Ivorien striker then paired up neatly with Burns whose great finish from the left arrived courtesy of an impressive one-two with Fofana.

Mike Stone made it 3-0 35 minutes in with a low drilled free kick that split the wall giving the keeper no chance.

It took a while for the fourth to arrive but it duly did with 15 minutes to go and another arrived just behind it.

Fofana finished sublimely at the back post after a Brendan Lane cross and then Joe Aronovsky got his name on the scoresheet with ten minutes to go, volleying home from close range on the end of a deep Mitch Jones cross from the left.

The visitors pulled a goal back late with a penalty and with time almost up, Michael McGreevy added a sixth for the Rocks, Aronovsky’s low cross finding the Belfast man in space.

Earlier in the curtain raiser, there was a vital and brilliant win for the reserves – Sean Hand’s excellent first half strike proving to be the difference between the sides as the Rocks beat their title rivals to stay top of the league.

Top scoring midfielder Hand notched his seventh of the season with a superb 35-yarder from the right flank.

Meanwhile, the Over 30s kept their 100% record in the league going with a hard fought 2-0 win over the Greek Americans.

011 Parkin

A first half free kick from Danny Parkin (pictured right) and a second half strike from Tayfun Gokmen gave their coach Paddy Mc Carry a nice birthday present!

Elsewhere, the women’s team earned a 1-1 draw against Astoria in Williamsburg, Shauna Cleary scoring the Rocks goal.

All three men’s teams face crucial ties once again in the league this coming weekend.

The Ukrainians will be a tough match up for the firsts and reserves at St Michael’s on Sunday (1pm/11am) while the Over 30s will have revenge on their minds when they take on Barnstonworth Premier.

Rocks host newcomers NY Supreme

It’s back to league action this weekend for the table topping Shamrocks.

Shane Moore

Shane Moore (pictured right) opened the scoring after 30 minutes for Glen Wrafter’s first team before Mike Stone made it 2-0 before half-time.

A Mohamed Fofana penalty brought his tally to seven for the season and after an own goal from the visitors, Santiago Rigby wrapped up the scoring with his sixth of the season.

There was less joy elsewhere – the reserves long trip to East Hampton FC yielding a frustrating 1-0 defeat to the relative newcomers to the Long Island Soccer League.

The league leading reserves embarked on the 200-míle round trip with confidence but in tough conditions, an early defensive error cost the Rocks dearly.

Stevie Doyle’s team rallied and battled well, their opponents going down to ten men in the second half but ultimately it was to no avail.

Super Mo hat-trick as Rocks clinch three more wins

WEEKEND RESULTS

  • Doxa 1 NY Shamrocks 6
  • Doxa Reserves 1 NY Shamrocks Reserves 3
  • Goettschee 2 NY Shamrocks Over 30s 3
  • NY Shamrocks Women 0 NY Skull 2

All three Shamrocks mens teams are top of their respective divisions this morning after a weekend of vital wins.

The biggest victory of Sunday was the first team’s impressive 6-1 win over fellow title challengers Doxa.

A Mohamed Fofana hat trick was the highlight but the Rocks dominated their opponents with impressive performances throughout the team.

The midfield was bolstered by the return of Shane Moore who was back in a first team jersey after a couple of good displays for the reserves while captain Rob Gaynor and Nikle Guzijan were a forceful pairing at the pack as usual.

Fofana opened the scoring with a well placed header after about 20 minutes, executing well from a superb Santiago Rigby cross from the right wing.

Rigby then made it 2-0 ten minutes later when a superb move down the left allowed Chris Burns to drill a low cross in to the back post to where the Uruguayan tapped home easily.

Rigby added a third just before half-time, taking advantage of a defensive error and sending a wonderful strike past the Doxa keeper.

Early in the second half, the Rocks went 4-0 up, Brendan Lane crossing to Joey Aronovsky who tapped home after a rebound, his third of the season.

Fofana took advantage of a defensive error to score his second and Shamrocks fifth and five minutes later, he made it 6-0, the top scorer’s sixth of the season.

Meanwhile, Stevie Doyle’s reserves were 3-1 winners in the curtainraiser.

Rigby’s Uruguayan compatriot Leandro Fregossi starred with two excellent strikes while Sean Hand added a third.

It was scoreless at half-time but the patient Rocks finally broke the deadlock ten minutes into the second half after a Hand corner dropped to Fregossi who made no mistake from eight yards out.

Fregossi’s second was a beauty, his and Hand’s goals both hitting the same top corner to make sure of the three points. Doxa scored late but the Rocks were comfortable in the end.

The Over 30s beat Gottschee 3-1 at Randall’s Island to stretch their 100% record to five wins from five.

The Rocks were 1-0 up within the first minute. Alex Berne’s free kick was parried to Sébastien Thiol who drilled it home from eight yards.

Gottschee enjoyed a period of dominance but the Docks scored against the run of play when Richie Brennan’s pass found Tayfun Gokmen who did well to round the keeper and fire home, making it 2-0.

Brennan himself made it 3-0 – his first strike as a Shamrock – 15 minutes into the second half when he finished off a nice move involving Berne and captain Eugene O’Driscoll.

The home side pulled two goals back in quick succession with about 20 minutes left but the Rocks held on to win it 3-2 and make it five wins from five.

Special mention to Ari Seidenstein who was playing his first game since the birth of his baby daughter Abigail.

Elsewhere, the women’s team played their first ever game at St Michael’s, defeated 2-0 as they continue to build.

Next weekend, the State Cup begins with the first team hosting Port Jefferson reserves at St Michael’s (1pm, Sunday).

The reserves face a 200-mile round trip to East Hampton for their tie (2pm, 18 Goodfriend Dr, East Hampton NY 11937) while the Over 30s face the Barnstonworth Premier side at 8pm on Sunday evening at Randall’s Island.
