20th anniversary of annual Shamrocks reunion brings old friends together

Thank you to Suzanne Mills for hosting yet another very enjoyable Shamrocks reunion at her lovely house in Malverne.

Memories were shared and there was also a touching tribute paid to the recently deceased Tom O’Farrell by the club’s honorary lifetime president, Pat Rooney.

This was the 20th year that Suzanne gathered everyone together at her residence and it continues to be a vital way of maintaining connections that were first forged over 50 years ago.

Rocks maintain lead as top scorer Clarke departs on high note

  • Grogan praises “amazing first half of season”
  • Super keeper Frankie puts Rocks in driving seat
  • Over 30s deadly dozen punishes Partizani
  • Reserves and 1960 stay in touch with leaders

shamrocks-sunday-schedule-graphic-1The Shamrocks ended the year on a perfect note with five brilliant victories on the final day of Cosmopolitan Soccer League action before a three-month winter break.

The first team and the Over 30s will head into spring as league leaders after impressive successes on Sunday while the reserves and Rocks 1960 solidified top four berths with eight league games to go.

Popular winger Jamie Clarke will depart the club as top scorer after his clinical first half strike sent the Rocks on their way to a superb 3-1 win over Pancyprians at Belson Stadium.

The result meant Kevin Grogan’s men sealed a unique double over the CSL giants while also providing a huge boost to the club’s play-off push in just their second season back in the top flight of New York amateur soccer..

It was the team’s fifth win in succession, opening out a four-point gap over second-placed Lansdowne who have a game in hand after being held to a 1-1 draw at home to the Greek Americans on Saturday night.

Goalkeeper Frankie Tsasse produced the best performance of his Shamrocks career, two penalty saves and several other crucial stops proving critical for his team in what was ultimately a comfortable win.

After Clarke pounced to knock home a rebounding Alejandro Fritz effort with almost 25 minutes on the clock, the Shamrocks struggled to add to their advantage and Pancyprians leveled with ten minutes left to the break.

In a game which saw a total of four penalties awarded, Ibrahim Diaby’s missed effort was made up for when his fellow midfielder Giuseppe Barone stepped up to the spot ten minutes later, converting his first goal of the season in style.

With just over a quarter of an hour left on the clock, the Rocks secured the result with an excellent counter attacking goal involving brilliant passes from Cónall McGrandles and Kwesi Mills-Odoi setting up Diaby who brilliantly chipped the advancing goalkeeper..

“Amazing first half of the season,” reflected Kevin Grogan.

“An amazing club with a quality structure behind the scenes. It’s every manager’s dream to be at a club like the Shamrocks.

“We want to thank Jamie Clarke for his contribution to the club. We wish him all the best for the future. He left with a touch of class today with a goal and an amazing speech after the game. He said he made friends for life and that sums this club up in a nutshell.

“We will regroup now over the holidays and then structure the new year so we can maintain success.”

STONE & SLAUGHTER INSPIRE RESERVES

The reserves also won 3-1, dominating the curtain raiser against their struggling Pancyprian counterparts thanks to goals from Sean O’Neill, man of the match Mike Stone and captain Paul McDaid.

The Rocks played a stylish opening half but were unfortunate to be only one goal to the good at the break, Joe Connolly’s saved shot tapped home by his strike partner O’Neill after 25 minutes.

007-joe-kennedyAfter Stone was pushed from right back to right wing, he made the most of the move, turning in on his left to send a blistering strike to the top far hand corner of the net. After McDaid tidily finished a great move with ten minutes to go, the game was over as a contest although there was time for the home team to convert a late penalty.

This fifth league win in a row ensured the Rocks stay within four points of leaders Lansdowne and, crucially, opened out a nine-point gap back to fifth-placed Cedar Stars Academy with the top four qualifying for the play-offs.

“We really clicked as a team – that was the most encouraging thing,” said coach John Riordan.

“Joe Kennedy was brilliant at center back and I thought Larry Slaughter played one of his best games of the season. Mike Stone was incredible and I was glad he got rewarded with a goal. Sean O’Neill was superb up front too and he could have scored a hat trick.

“They are a pleasure to work with and they are all hungry for success. They don’t want this winter break – that’s how much they’ve gained confidence in each other. But we’ll come back in March ready to push home for the play-offs and then anything is possible.”

McGEENEY & RILEY PUNISH PARTIZANI

Meanwhile, the Over 30s braved the sleet of Sunday evening to fire 12 goals past Partizani without reply at Randall’s Island.

Their tenth win of the Fall was inspired by an incredible five goals from Johhny McGeeney and four from Sean Riley, the duo now level with each other at the top of the club’s scoring charts with 15 each. The other strikes arrived courtesy of Nei de Oliveira, Alex Berne and an own goal.

“I’m very happy with the performance, the three points and a clean sheet,” said coach Paddy Mc Carry.

“The big score leaves us top of the table on goal difference. Our front men will cause any team trouble and they were on top form. Riley and Johhny were top class.

“It was a great team performance in very bad conditions. To be top of the league and in the last eight of the State Cup, that’s a great way to finish the first half of the season. All credit to the players – they have been great once again.”

Dave Harvey scored twice for Shamrocks 1960 in a 3-1 win over struggling Deportivo Sociedade at Flushing Memorial Park, a result that kept Andy Connolly’s men fourth in the Metro 1 standings. The game also heralded Johnny Hall’s first goal for the club.

The scheduled trip for the Legends to Banatul was forfeited by the home side, handing Emmett Harvey’s men an automatic 3-0 win to round out their year, sending the team up to third in the conference.

Rocks wary of improved Pancyprians

  • Grogan warns of Freedoms backlash
  • Fetherston returns for reserves
  • Rocks 1960 face winless Deportivo
  • Legends and 30s share Randalls Island double header

shamrocks-sunday-schedule-graphicKevin Grogan has sounded a note of caution ahead of a tough trip to take on CSL Division 1 rivals Pancyprians this coming Sunday (St John’s University, Belson Stadium – 2pm)

The Rocks gaffer warned that the league kingpins would be still smarting after their heavy defeat at St Michaels last month, a 5-2 victory which kept his team riding high at the top of the table.

A further worry is that defensive stalwart Charlie O’Loughlin will miss out due to having picked up two yellow cards during last week’s State Cup win over East Hampton.

shamrock0628

However, the addition of new signing Lerthon Theuma, who just completed a stint at Hofstra University, will provide a huge boost to the team.

This weekend will also herald the final game for our popular standout winger Jamie Clarke who will return to his native Armagh to restart his top level GAA career.

“The Pancyprians are one of – if not the – biggest clubs in the history of the league and they will be fuming that we beat them 5-2 last month,” said Grogan.

“We have gone through all the emotions this season that a team needs to go through so whatever is thrown at us on Sunday, I anticipate that we will not panic and we will stick to the game-plan that has served us very well so far this season.

“Charlie will be a massive loss to us but he will still be there on Sunday, in amongst the squad, and he will use his tremendous presence to help us try and get a result.”

toys-for-totsFETHERSTON RETURNS FOR RESERVES

In the opening game at the Queens venue, the reserves will look to make it six wins in a row when they try to replicate last month’s twin successes over the men in blue.

The Pancyprian reserves have lost five games in a row including November’s heavy league defeat to the Rocks and a subsequent State Cup reversal. But John Riordan said his team is expecting a much improved set of opponents this weekend.

“We’re a missing a few big players so I’m not exactly comfortable going into this game,” he admitted, adding that the welcome return of veteran center back Timmy Fetherston from a long injury lay-off will be a huge plus for the squad.

“It’s a great place to play football and it’s very much suited to our style of play. We need the win to keep in touch with the top three and I want us to be comfortably in play-off contention when the season starts up again.”

PARTIZANI OBSTACLE FOR OVER 30s

There will be a double header for the elders at Randalls Island on Sunday evening with the Legends and the Over 30s facing into games at 6pm and 8pm respectively.

Paddy Mc Carry’s champions take on bottom side Partizani who have only managed one win in their nine games thus far.

“We go into Sunday night’s game looking for the three points that will keep us top of the league going into winter break,” said the Donegal man.

“We did not play great last week in the cup but we still won. We will be looking for a far better performance this week, that’s for sure. After the Manhattan Celtic defeat, we talked about winning all our games leading into the winter break. If we win Sunday, we will have done that and that’s a credit to all the boys. They have put in a huge effort.”

LEGENDS BIDDING TO BEAT BANATUL

Emmett Harvey is also targeting a win for his Legends when they go up against Banatul, also on Field 70.

“We plan to finish the first half of the season on a strong note,” he said.

“We have had some results that did not go our way so far this season but with a strong squad to choose from on Sunday, we will do our best to pick up some points. The commitment shown by all my players throughout the first half of the season has been fantastic.”

1960 AIMING TO STAY FOURTH

Meanwhile, Shamrocks 1960 are back in action after a couple of weekends off. They take on winless Deportivo Sociedade at Flushing Memorial Park with a 2pm kick-off.

“We’re still dealing with a few injuries so the break will come at a good time,” said assistant coach Neil Mannion.

“But we have enough quality throughout the squad to get the required result.”

Five star Rocks march on to State Cup semi-final

shamrocks-state-cup-schedule-graphicIbrahim Diaby and Jamie Clarke inspired a superb 5-0 Manning Cup victory over East Hampton on Sunday at St Michaels, the talented duo scoring two goals each to set up a springtime State Cup semi-final showdown with the Greek Americans.

The game was over by half-time and maybe even by the time Diaby’s deflected opener set the Rocks on their way. Clarke followed up with goals two and three, sending him to the top of the team’s goalscoring charts, bringing his tally to six in all competitions.

shamrock0659

The Armagh man’s first was a well-placed low left-footed half volley and his second resulted from a run that cut in from the right, allowing him to beat the visiting goalkeeper at the near post with another left-footed shot.

The free flowing Diaby made it 4-0 long before half-time allowing Kevin Grogan to ring the changes. Substitute Alex Wasilewski made it 5-0 with 15 minutes to go, his composed finish from ten yards out resulting from what was his first touch of the game, shortly after coming on.

shamrock0402-1

Alex Wasilewski stepped up to Shamrocks first team action at the weekend and scored on his debut for Kevin Grogan’s men after arriving into the game as a substitute. Picture: Dennis Schneidler / NY Shamrocks

“I’m very happy with the win,” admitted Grogan.

“We dominated the first half. We lost a small bit of rhythm because we made a few substitutions in quick succession. We would usually stagger subs in order to keep that rhythm.

“I was very happy to see both of the Zorbo brothers on the field at the same time and I was delighted for Alex to get a goal on his first team debut. All focus on next week’s league game against Pancyprians now.”

McGRANDLES FIRES RESERVES TO VICTORY

Cónall McGrandles scored twice to help the reserves record a narrow 2-1 win their D’Arpino Cup Round of 16 game against Division 1 rivals Zum Schneider.

shamrock0698

Guesting at center midfield due to being cup tied to John Riordan’s team, McGrandles made the most of a first half free kick which he rifled straight and low, outsmarting the Zum goalkeeper and ensuring his side took a deserved 1-0 lead into the break.

The German outfit rallied, however, and were full value for their equalizer midway through the second half, an unstoppable shot that flew past Jesse Corke into the top right hand corner.

The reserves regrouped and made their pressure pay with ten minutes to go when McGrandles allowed himself enough time to place a perfect shot to the bottom right hand corner.

“It wasn’t a great game but it feels good to be through to the quarters now,” said Riordan. “They pressed us and disrupted our flow and they were impressive in the second half. They’re a dangerous team and we have to be happy with a win, no matter how we get it.”

The reserves will now play East Hampton’s seconds with the winners set to face either Lansdowne or Manhattan Celtic in the semi-final.

TOP SCORER RILEY’S WINNER KEEPS CHAMPS’ HOPES ALIVE

Meanwhile, in the Over 30s Marth Cup Round of 16, there was a win and a loss for the club with Paddy McCarry’s champions edging out Integral 3-2 at Randalls Island and the Legends going down bravely 2-1 away to Glen Cove.

In what was a dramatic cup game, Integral took an early 1-0 lead but the Rocks leveled it ten minutes later when Alex Berne pounced on a rebound following a superb Johnny McGeeney free kick.

Integral then went out in front again after an excellent long range strike but they were reeled back again after failing to deal with a dangerous cross which caused a visiting defender to send the ball into his own net, making it 2-2 at the break. Sean Riley’s brilliant winner arrived with 30 minutes left on the clock, forcing the Rocks to dig deep until the full time whistle as they held on to their slim margin of victory.

“Today was a real battle for us,” said Mc Carry whose team will now travel to Port Jefferson in the quarter-finals.

“We were very rusty after our three-week lay-off and Integral certainly came to play. We had to cope with a lot of pressure for the last 20 minutes but our defense held strong.

“Tayfun Gokmen and Johnny Mc Geeney put in a hell of a lot of work and running. It was not pretty and we did not play well but as usual, this team dug deep for each other and we got the win and are through to the last eight in the spring. Great team effort from all 14 of them – very proud of the boys!”

STIGLICH’S LAST GAME ENDS ON A HIGH NOTE

Matteo Stiglich’s late consolation goal for the Legends was a silver lining at the end of a tough game, the Peruvian marking his final game with the club in perfect style before heading home to South America.

Dominant Glen Cove were deserved winners, taking a 2-0 victory into the dying stages before the impressive defender capped off a good display with that late strike.

“We traveled out to Long Island with confidence and belief because we know on our day we can give anyone a game and we did just that,” noted player-coach Emmett Harvey.

“On a terrible pitch against a strong team which is unbeaten in a competitive league, we knew we were up against it but played wonderful and battled brilliantly. With five minutes to go and losing 1-0, we knew we had to go for it. We bombed forward with the belief that we could get a result but Glen Cove hit us on the break to make it 2-0. Man of the match Matteo Stiglich signed off with his last game for the Legends and the last kick of the game with a brilliant finish to the bottom corner to make it 2-1. I am very proud of these guys and the commitment and effort was brilliant to see from every player. Special mention to Robbie O’Neill, Tomas Maher and Marcus Nascimento.”

PROUD PEREZ PRAISES ROCKS B AS EDGERLY STEPS UP TO SECURE A POINT

Elsewhere, the Metro Women’s League Division A cup semi-final was forfeited by Fuel FC, sending Paddy Geraghty’s league leaders through to the final and thus ensuring that last season’s Division B league and cup champions will round out 2016 undefeated.

Emily Edgerly’s late leveler salvaged a point in dramatic circumstances for Keith Perez’s Shamrocks B side, securing a well deserved 3-3 draw away to NYC United at East River Park.

The Rocks had taken an early lead with a goal from Colleen Cavanagh which was set up by Denise Wilson but United returned with an equalizer and took the lead after converting a penalty. Wilson then herself scored thanks to an assist from Valery Lux but the home team took the lead again at the end of the half from a set piece. A tight second half ended in perfect style for the Rocks, however, as Edgerly pounced to score her second of the season and salvage a point for her team.

“We battled hard on both ends of the field and created some great chances on the offensive end while holding the opposition scoreless in the second half,” said Perez. “It was a hard fought effort and I am very proud of them for not giving up and continuing to fight which resulted in Emily’s late goal.”

Rocks return to State Cup action

  • Tough task for firsts as in-form East Hampton visit St Michaels
  • Reserves aiming to topple Zum Schneider
  • Champion Over 30s hosting Long Island’s Integral
  • Geraghty targeting advance to Division A League Cup decider

shamrocks-state-cup-schedule-graphicThe Rocks will be up for the cup this weekend with four State Cup games on Sunday combined with a League Cup showdown for the women’s team in what should be an exciting day of action.

The Manning Cup quarter-final clash between Kevin Grogan’s first team and top Long Island Soccer League outfit East Hampton is arguably the biggest game of the weekend across all competitions (St Michaels – Sunday at 1pm).

The CSL Division 1 league leaders welcome an East Hampton outfit which boasts an almost identically impressive record in their own campaign with the Long Island men having only lost one game on their way to a 7-1 record which has them out in front at the top of their conference.

East Hampton arrive into this one on the back of two 1-0 wins – both at home – over CSL sides, Zum Schneider and NYAC. But their trip to Queens will be a step-up in class and although Grogan won’t be able to count on cup tied duo, Cónall McGrandles and Stu Colbert, confidence in the camp is high as the winter break approaches.

“We are very excited about this big State Cup quarter-final,” said Kevin Grogan.

shamrock0588

Kevin Grogan

“I keep saying that game day is the best day of the week and it is. Those game day butterflies through anticipation for the kick-off and then the rollercoaster of emotion during a game.

“And of course knowing that if everyone does their best in terms of work ethic that we have a chance of winning because we have so much quality in the squad.

“We need work ethic to be our foundation. We can’t forget why we are doing well this year. It starts with hard work, discipline and concentration levels.”

RESERVES SEEKING REVENGE

The curtain raiser at the Astoria venue is the D’Arpino Cup Round of 16 clash of Shamrocks Reserves and Zum Schneider Reserves (St Michaels – 11am).

John Riordan’s men are hoping to avenge a remarkable league game between the teams back in late September when the Rocks relinquished a 3-0 lead, ultimately downed 5-4 by the top flight newcomers. However, the German side have failed to win a CSL game since with their only highlight throughout October and November being a 3-0 success over Cedar Stars in the previous round of the cup.

McGrandles and Colbert will offer the reserves a solid presence through the middle while the return of Brendan Lane, Mike Stone and Johnny Hayes all ensure this will be the most competitive reserves squad of the season.

“We’ve put together a nice run – four wins in a row – so the players are enjoying themselves,” said Riordan. “It will be a big headache picking the team on Sunday but moving on to the next round is a major target so that’s more important than anything this weekend.”

CHAMPS TAKE ON INTEGRAL

Marth Cup champions, Shamrock Over 30s, will host Long Island’s Integral at Randalls Island 70 on Sunday and the 12pm kick off is sure to produce a hard fought tussle.

With four wins and four losses, Integral are second from bottom in the West Conference of the Over 30s Division in Long Island but they are in a good run of form, winning three of their last five league games while also securing an impressive 3-0 victory over Lansdowne in the previous round of this competition.

In spite of all that, coach Paddy Mc Carry is confident that his cup holders can march on to the quarter-finals.

“We have an extremely strong 16-man squad to chose from,” he said.

“It’ll be great to welcome back both Johnny Keogh and Eugene Reynolds from injury. We are defending champs and we know we have a huge target on our backs – everybody wants to beat the holders. But all our boys take the State Cup very seriously and we want to be back in that final in June. Integral will have to bring their A game on Sunday. I expect a battle – they are a good side – but we are raring to go for this one.”

LEGENDS VISIT GLEN COVE

Meanwhile, Integral’s conference rivals, Glen Cove, will host the Legends in the other Marth Cup clash involving a Rocks team (Brookside Jr HS – 9.30am).

“The State Cup is a competition we are taking very seriously and we would like to continue this cup run for as long as we can,” said player-coach Emmett Harvey. “Although we are missing a few key players such as John Riordan, Tyrone Kent and Randall Friedman, we have put together a really good squad and we are looking forward to this next challenge.”

WOMEN EYEING ENTRY TO FINAL

Elsewhere, there will be a double header for the women’s teams at East 6th St on Sunday afternoon with a Metro Women’s League Division A Cup semi-final against Fuel FC (1pm) preceding a Division B league make-up game between the Rocks and NYC United (3pm).

“It’s a big game for us on Sunday,” said coach Paddy Geraghty of the first match-up.

“We have a chance to make it to the cup final and also finish the fall season unbeaten. We have a very strong squad for the game so we have a great chance. We are starting to create more chances and be more patient in possession.”

It will also be the final match-up before the winter break for Keith Perez’s B team and the coach’s aim is to be in a solid position to fight for a share of top of the league when play resumes in the Spring.

“We are expected to be at full strength and look to continue to build off our team dynamic and hard work ethics,” said Perez. “The ladies will be prepared to put on a great performance which will hopefully lead to another victory before we break for the winter.”

Five wins and a dramatic draw allowed the Shamrocks honor Robbie Walsh in perfect fashion on a weekend when his number 14 Legends jersey was worn for the last time by his good friend Eoin Sweeney.

And Sweeney wore it in style, entering the fray as an impact striker and quickly setting up Eddie Gilmartin for the all-important equalizer with 10 minutes to go against Barnstonworth Veterans at Bush Terminal Piers Park, the last field Robbie played on back at the start of October.

Sweeney’s pivoting lay-off to the edge of the box and Gilmartin’s neat finish sparked wild celebrations, before players and friends of Robbie gathered after the game to retire the 14 jersey.

“It was a testament to Robbie Walsh’s character and legacy that on a freezing cold, windy day in Brooklyn, a large crowd turned out to pay tribute to the Shamrocks legend,” Sweeney said afterwards.

“It was fitting that the team battled back from a 1-0 deficit to earn a share of the spoils. Robbie would have been proud of our never-say-die attitude We will miss you but you will never be forgotten.”

it wasn’t just the Shamrocks club that took part in moments of silence for our former coach and captain – Cosmopolitan Soccer League president Mike Fitzgerald sent out a directive to all clubs across all divisions to stand together before their games.

“I want to pay tribute to the president and the board of the CSL for this great gesture,” said club president Sean Mc Mullan. “Our gratitude to all clubs for taking part. Robbie would have been delighted to be held in such high regard by our league.”

FIRSTS KEEP ROLLING

Kevin Grogan praised what he described as “the most important win of the season” after he watched his side record their eighth league win of the campaign at St Michaels on Saturday night.

Birthday boy Alejandro Fritz (pictured below) scored a superb header midway through the second half to pave the way for a well earned 1-0 success over a plucky Doxa outfit.

shamrock1139

The result keeps the Rocks five points clear at the top of Division 1 although Lansdowne will play one of their two games in hand at Pancyprians on Sunday evening.

During a game played in brutal conditions, the Rocks back line kept its fifth clean sheet of the season, with goalkeeper Frankie Tsasse solid behind center backs Zachary Gosse and Charlie O’Loughlin while full backs Stu Colbert and Dan Giorgi played superbly throughout.

shamrock0588

Grogan was especially pleased with the first team debut of Cónall McGrandles, the former Cliftonville player marshaling the midfield excellently in the absence of the suspended Giuseppe Barone.

“This was the most important win of the season,” the Rocks gaffer stated.

“It wasn’t the best of performances but we had the maturity and patience to score and win.

“We were delighted to get Cónall involved for the first time and we were also very happy with Ale’s goal. He produced at the right time which was a key moment of the season so far.”

SCOTT STRIKE SEALS POINTS

Andrew Scott was the goal hero for the reserves in the curtain raiser, pouncing late for a cool headed finish to earn all three points against a talented Doxa reserves team.

John Riordan’s men had controlled most of the game but a breakthrough was a long time coming as the visitors thwarted the Rocks in a high intensity game.

This was the team’s fourth win in a row in all competitions and their fourth in five league games, consolidating their third place position behind Lansdowne and the Greek Americans.

“We are really starting to click now and the lads are enjoying each game,” said the reserves boss.

“This was their toughest challenge of the season and they stood up to it. Two months ago we might have left this slip by but we were solid throughout and Andrew did very well to come in and take his chance.”

1960 CRUSH CROATIA

Long serving goalkeeper Robbie O’Neill kept his second clean sheet of the weekend as Rocks 1960 cruised past Metro 1 rivals Croatia, winning 5-0 on the back of a Hughie McGowan hat trick and a goal each from Larry Slaughter and Isaac Wohlsen.

O’Neill, who had lined out 24 hours previously for the reserves, was flawless again between the posts as he watched his team mates put together a display that lifted the side to fourth place.

007-1960-and-14-jersey

Shamrocks 1960 pictured after their 5-0 win over Croatia hold the number 14 jersey in honor of Robbie Walsh.

“The 1960s boys did themselves extremely proud in difficult conditions on Sunday night,” said coach Andy Connolly.

“The tone of our fighting spirit was set by our exemplary captain, Dave Harvey, who gave the team talk beforehand. Dave spoke with honesty and eloquence about Robbie Walsh and his influence on players and the club, emphasizing the need for our team to rediscover the kind of heart and bravery that Robbie instilled among his players.

“Dave’s exhortative remarks ran through the entire performance as the lads played one of their best games so far. We were blessed with the contributions of Stu Colbert and Larry Slaughter who helped us raise our game no end. Amidst a rousing display from all, Hughie McGowan rose to the top by scoring a hat-trick and battling throughout off the ball, marking one of the individual performances of the season. I hope this was a fitting tribute to Robbie, who we will continue to remember throughout the season.”

CUP WINS FOR WOMEN

Earlier on Sunday, the Shamrocks Women’s teams moved on to the next rounds of their League Cups with a couple of great wins at St Michaels on Sunday afternoon.

The Division A Cup game, which ended in a 4-0 victory over CPR White, marked one year undefeated for Paddy Geraghty’s charges, a landmark which was earned on the back of goals from Chloe Wheeler (set up by Denise Wilson), Teresa Ferraro, Sharon Odofin (penalty) and Jackie Pounder.

“We were solid today and we did what was needed,” said Geraghty. “Everyone played at least 45 mins and we got to try players in different positions. We play one more game before the winter break in the State Cup so we’ll train hard until then and hopefully finish with a win.”

In the Division B Cup, meanwhile, Cassey Esposito returned from her head injury in fine style, coming on late to score the game winner in a 2-1 result over Appletown. Colleen Cavanagh had opened the scoring for Keith Perez’s team.

“Another great team effort,” noted Perez. “The players defended and moved as a team the entire game making it difficult for Appletown to get anything going. Cassey Esposito came in clutch at the end, fighting through injury to put the Rocks up. They all rallied together then to stay resilient and secure victory. We look forward to the final game of the Fall portion of the season so we can make sure we are in a position to be at the top of the table as the winter break arrives.”

There was an atmosphere of mourning in the air on Sunday at St Michaels where the memory of recently deceased Shamrocks legend Robbie Walsh was honored by a powerful moment of silence. However, the action on the field was both a positive and fitting tribute to the popular and beloved Kildare native.

The Shamrocks Reserves moved on to the last 16 of the D’Arpino Cup with a convincing 3-0 win over Pancyprians while the Women’s B team pushed Division A giants NY Magic all the way to a dramatic penalty shootout defeat in the curtain raiser.

With Robbie’s favored number 14 hanging at the sideline on a gloriously sunny afternoon, both teams gathered together between the games to hear some memories recounted in a touching speech by Paddy Geraghty, close friend and former team mate of the long serving Shamrock.

Both teams then moved to the center circle where they were joined by the players of Pancyprian Freedoms to mark an impeccably observed minute of silence.

Club president Sean Mc Mullan said he was extremely grateful to the players for taking the time to pay their respects to Robbie.

“Some of the players didn’t get the chance to know Robbie but they knew what this meant to us as a club,” said Mc Mullan.

“We are very grateful to them for helping us to pay tribute and we also appreciate Pancyprians joining us to mark this sad occasion.

“We will honor Robbie again next week: before the first team game, before the Over 30s game and, most importantly, before both the Legends and 1960 games.”

COLEMAN AND O’NEILL ON TARGET

The reserves were slow to get a grip on proceedings when action finally got underway in the D’Arpino Cup game.

It took until the 45th minute of the first half before the deadlock was broken, Darren Coleman finishing brilliantly after a sweeping counter attack which he launched with a deft lay-off.

Pancyprians battled their way back into it in the second half and won a penalty after goalkeeper Jesse Corke took down one of their forwards with a late tackle just inside the box.

But Corke was an immediate hero, saving the resultant spot kick and inspiring his side to push home their dominance of the game. Substitute Sean O’Neill made the most of a late chance to make it 2-0 and he then converted an injury time penalty which he himself earned.

“We made hard work of it,” admitted coach John Riordan whose team will now face Zum Schneider in the Last 16 on Sunday December 4.

“But I’m delighted with the result, particularly considering the build-up to the game was a little distracting for the players. I’m delighted we could honor Robbie today and of course this victory is dedicated to him.”

SO CLOSE TO A CUP UPSET

Meanwhile, there was a mix of heartbreak and pride for the Rocks Women B in the opening game.

An early Denise Richards penalty had the Rocks one up inside the opening couple of minutes and the home team deservedly took their 1-0 lead into the break.

Cassie Esposito extended that lead with a superb finish just short of the hour mark, a strike which gave hopes of a shock upset.

But the talented Magic outfit battled back brilliantly in what was an eerily similar reprisal of what happened a year ago at the same location.

On November 11, 2015, the Rocks were 2-0 up against their illustrious opponents only for Magic to turn the tables and edge the game 3-2. On this occasion, Magic could only force a 2-2 tie, setting up a tense penalty shoot-out.

There were chances to win it for the Rocks but alas, it wasn’t to be and Magic survived to advance to the next round, winning 5-4 after eight rounds of spot kicks.

Wilson, Colleen Kavanagh, Sam Horvath and Mackenzie Guarano all scored while the loss of Esposito with 15 minutes remaining due to a serious clash of heads ultimately proved to be a serious setback for the Rocks. Everyone at the club wishes Cassie a speedy recovery from what was an unfortunate incident.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE NEXT ROUNDS

While our other teams enjoyed a week off, opponents for the next round of games in the respective cups were confirmed. The first team will travel to East Hampton for the quarter-finals of the Manning Cup; the Over 30s will host Integral in the Marth Cup; and the Legends will take on Glen Cove, also in the Marth Cup.

Five-star Rocks rattle Pancyprians in big victory

  • Kevin Grogan praises ‘amazing goals’ as Rocks stay top
  • Reserves blow Pancyprians away on a memorable evening
  • Johnny McGeeney double secures Irish Derby win for Over 30s
  • Women B back to winning ways

shamrocks-sunday-schedule-graphicAnother Jamie Clarke double drove the Shamrocks to victory at St Michaels on Saturday night, helping to seal a memorable 5-2 demolition of Pancyprians on what was a brilliant weekend for the club.

Clarke and Kwesi Mills-Odoi both moved on to four goals each for the season in a game which saw the attacking philosophy of Kevin Grogan find another gear and blow the perennial CSL giants away.

It keeps the league leaders five points clear of champions Lansdowne who have two games in hand while the Freedoms slipped to fourth in the table, eight points adrift of the Rocks.

After the home side conceded an extremely soft early goal inside the opening minute, they took the game to their illustrious opponents and were eventually rewarded with a Damian Lopez header, set up brilliantly by a Mills-Odoi cross from the right.

Clarke made it 2-1 with a composed finish and then a superbly curled Mills-Odoi shot from the left to the far corner proved to be a fitting way to extend the lead.

Incredibly, it was 4-1 by half-time, Alejandro Fritz’s deflected drive deceiving the beleaguered Pancyprians shot stopper.

The visitors reconfigured after the break and just short of the hour mark, they earned a penalty which was cooly dispatched to narrow the lead to two goals.

However, the Rocks found their stride again and Clarke’s second of the evening was the result of a great build-up which broke the Pancyprians resolve once and for all.

Grogan was naturally happy that his message sat well with his players: “I sent a Walt Disney quote to them before the game: ”Whatever you do, do it well. Do it so well that when people see you do it, they will want to come back and see you do it again’.

“I felt we scored five amazing goals and entertained the crowd and did our job ‘so well’.

“A big thank you to our club president Sean McMullan and Eddie Gilamrtin for helping with the signing of our new player Cónall McGrandles (former Cliftonville and Larne). Cónall will start training this week for us and is a great addition to the squad. We have two big league games left and also the quarter-final of the State Cup. We need all players focused for all three of these games before we break for the winter.”

RECORD HAUL FOR RESERVES

Joe Connolly’s first half hat trick set the tone for a dramatically lopsided reserves win which saw John Riordan’s men fire a record 13 goals past their opponents ahead of the two sides clashing once again in the State Cup next Sunday at St Michaels (1pm).

Connolly opened the scoring early before a fortuitous an own goal made it 2-0. By half-time it was 6-0 with the frustrated visitors also reduced to ten men. Top scorer Alex Wasilewski moved on to nine goals for the season with a skillful left-footed shot around the keeper, Connolly scored his second and third and finally George Lara finished off a great move to open his account with the assist from Darren Coleman.

With several half-time changes, the Rocks endured a shaky start to the second half conceding two quick goals including a penalty but they soon gathered themselves and when Coleman made it 7-2, the floodgates opened.

Andrew Scott (above left) and reserves captain Paul McDaid scored two goals each.

Andrew Scott flicked the ball home expertly at the front post, Coleman scored again, Brendan Lane’s cameo up front yielded a goal for him and there was also time for a brace for Paul McDaid which was split by a second Scott goal.

“It got a little out of control but as one of the players said afterwards, we can only beat what’s in front of us,” said Riordan.

“I’m glad they’re enjoying their football and also staying disciplined against teams who are lacking in that department. We have them again next week so we will have to be on our toes in case of any backlash.”

DERBY WIN SENDS 30s TOP

Sunday kickstarted with a vital 2-0 Irish Derby win over Manhattan Celtic Legends that sent Paddy Mc Carry’s Over 30s to the top East, three points ahead of their title rivals.

It was a reversal of last month’s tough loss in the away game, redressing the balance at the top of the table where second place Celtic have a game in hand.

Johnny McGeeney scored twice, the second a goal of the season contender which resulted from a mazy run and a stunning curled finish from 25 yards to the top corner.

“This was a great team performance against an excellent Manhattan Celtic side,” said coach Paddy Mc Carry.

“The boys had to work extremely hard for their victory today. Both goals were fantastic from Johnny – the second being one of the best I have ever seen in person. Defensively we were excellent again but today was all about the team effort. They played for each other because they knew we needed the three points. I’m very proud of every single one of them.”

TOUGH DEFEATS FOR 1960 & LEGENDS

Elsewhere, there were two very hard defeats at St Michaels for the Shamrocks Legends and Shamrocks 1960.

In spite of a goal each from Dave Harvey and Paul McDaid in the first half for Rocks 1960, Gotham Argo rallied from 2-0 down to win 3-2 and leapfrog the home side to fourth in the table.

“That was a tough loss to take,” admitted assistant coach Neil Mannion. “To lose the lead in that fashion is very unlike us. We’ve made life difficult for ourselves now but we’ll regroup and look to finish on a strong note before the winter break.”

And it was a courageous loss for the Legends who conceded late and succumbed 1-0 to league champions Cosmoz, a team which has now won 24 games in a row.

“That was a brilliant and battling performance from the men in green but we just came up short,” said coach Emmett Harvey.

“It’s probably one of our best games in Legends history. It’s a defeat that we can be really proud of. We were superb across the back line and midfield. Every single one of the players were excellent and this team will only go from strength to strength.

“Some outstanding play by John Riordan in midfield and Brendan Donoghue and Eoghan Mc Parland on the wings. There were also some fine saves by Joe Connolly.”

ESPOSITO ON TARGET AGAIN FOR WOMEN B

Meanwhile, in Metro Women’s League Division B, Keith Perez’s charges were great value for their 3-1 win over NYC United B. Goals from Cassie Esposito, Carly Johnson and Emily ‘Edge’ Iwamoto made the difference for Rocks, allowing them to stay in contention with the leaders ahead of next weekend’s State Cup game.

The Division A Cup game against CPR White was postponed.

Clarke brace inspires comeback win

  • First team maintains five-point gap at the top
  • Women set to enjoy winter break as league leaders
  • Irish Derby victory for 1960 at Lansdowne
  • Big wins for reserves and Over 30s

shamrocks-sunday-schedule-graphic-2The Shamrocks teams were in a free-scoring mood this past weekend with no less than 29 goals recorded across six games as the first team and women’s team both solidified their league leading starts to the season with excellent victories.

Jamie Clarke scored twice for the firsts as Kevin Grogan’s men finally broke the resolve of bogey team Polonia with a brilliant 3-1 win on Saturday night at St Michaels that keeps the Rocks five points clear at the top of CSL Division 1.

Chasing duo Lansdowne and Pancyprians both enjoyed big wins so a home success was the priority for the Shamrocks as they sought to bounce back from the previous weekend’s Irish Derby defeat.

But it wasn’t an entirely straightforward proposition initially as Polonia took a dramatic early lead thanks to a superb long range shot. However, the Shamrocks took control of affairs midway through the first half and the excellent wing play of Jamie Clarke was rewarded with a lovely finish that arrived after he chested the ball down to swivel and volley home in one perfect motion.

Clarke’s second was equally impressive – Giuseppe Barone’s fantastic cross-field ball found the always dangerous winger Alejandro Fritz who crossed accurately to the head of Clarke, his perfectly timed leap helping to direct the ball to the back of the net.

With goalkeeper Frankie Tsasse and his two center backs Zachary Gosse and Charlie O’Loughlin all playing flawlessly in defense, the Shamrocks continued to dominate in the second half and it was eventually Kwesi Mills-Odoi who pounced from close range, his fourth goal of the season sealing the result.

“You earn every point in this league,” said Grogan. “That’s why it’s one of the best leagues in the nation. We got three points and that was the goal. We were very happy with Jamie Clarke’s performance. He scored two goals and set the barometer for himself. It’s all about next week now at home to Pancyprians.”

The reserves recorded their biggest win in over two years, a 9-0 hammering of ten-man Polonia which sent John Riordan’s men up to a share of second place in the division.

Strikers Alex Wasilewski and Sean O’Neill shared three goals in the first two minutes that ended the game as a contest incredibly early with both players going on to complete impressive hat tricks. Darren Coleman also got in on the act with a pair of goals of the season, one of which was a 30 yard stunner that was the standout highlight of the game. Debuting midfielder Martin Fitzpatrick from Kildare marked his first game with the ninth and final goal of the game.

“I’m delighted for them because they were hurting after last weekend,” reflected coach John Riordan.

“We challenged Alex and Sean to take their chances and they did that pretty quickly! After that, it was a very solid performance against a young side. We reacted well after they went down to ten men too which was pleasing.

“It was a great debut from Martin Fitzpatrick and an unbelievable goal by Darren Coleman which was exactkly what he deserved.”

Sunday morning got off to the perfect start with a 2-0 win for Rocks 1960 at Lansdowne Bhoys in the Metro 1 Irish Derby. Dave Harvey scored a goal in either half to move his team up to fourth, his second arriving from the penalty spot.

“It was an amazing effort by the lads,” said assistant coach Neil Mannion. “They were all immense but special mention to Paul McGinley who was man of the match.

“Second half entertainment was provided by Robbie O’Neill who provided us with a throw/bounce/kick that hasn’t been seen in the history of football! On a serious note, the save he produced from a free kick prior to that was top class.”

Elsewhere, the Over 30s were in dominant form at Randall’s Island, firing eight past Partizani without reply. A Johnny McGeeney hat trick and another pair of goals from Sean Reilly helped keep the league champions in touch with Manhattan Celtic at the top while there also strikes from Alex Berne, Tayfun Gokmen and Leo Coimbra.

Unfortunately for the Legends, though, their good run of form was halted by a 1-0 defeat late Sunday night at Doxa. In spite of a man of the match performance from Eoghan McParland in midfield and an excellent display by Matteo Stiglich in defense, Emmett Harvey’s men couldn’t make the breakthrough with the Doxa goalkeeper pulling off some outstanding saves, particularly from Brendan Donoghue and Richie Brennan.

“We had the majority of possession and shots on target but it meant little in the end,” said assistant coach Eoin Sweeney.

“The team is in its second year. We are in a building process and we are going in the right direction to be challenging the top teams in the division. We move on with optimism to face Cosmoz next week.”

Meanwhile, in the Metro Women’s League, the Shamrocks cemented their grip at the top of Division A with a big 7-1 win at home to Fuel FC on Sunday afternoon.

Former QPR starlet Sharon Odofin opened her account for her new club in just her second game with a pair of expertly finished goals. Chloe Wheeler was also on the scoresheet twice, moving her tally for the season up to 10. Georgia Frost, Jackie Pounder and captain Teresa Ferraro all scored to ensure the Rocks will be sitting pretty on 19 points going into the spring portion of the season.

“Every one of my teammates contributed to this win,” said captain Teresa Ferraro. “Both Shamrocks women’s teams have been training hard together each week and our dedication and consistency is really starting to show on the field. We are excited about our success thus far but we know we have to stay focused for the two tough cup games coming up.”

Rocks ready for old foe Polonia

  • Grogan’s men prepared for tough battle
  • Irish Derby for Rocks 1960 at Lansdowne
  • Women aiming to stay top going into spring

shamrocks-sunday-schedule-graphic-1

The Shamrocks will host Polonia Gwardia at St Michaels on Saturday evening (8pm), almost six months after May’s infamous Williamsburg clash pf the pair which ultimately led to a reversal of the result and a reprieval for the Rocks.

That 1-0 defeat to Greenpoint’s Polish club initially relegated Kevin Grogan’s men but the inclusion of an ineligible player caused an overturning of the final score, thus preserving the Division 1 status of the Shamrocks. Polonia subsequently survived due to United FC’s disbanding and have since merged with Gwardia to bolster their resources.

All that aside, the focus for Grogan this week has been very much on achieving an immediate response to last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at champions Lansdowne who now lie five points behind the league leading Rocks.

rocktober-fest

“It’s the biggest game of the season and we will learn a lot about our players this weekend,” emphasized Grogan.

“Consistency, concentration and intensity of training and games are the key component’s for success. We can talk about a million other things but without these three things nobody can achieve success.

“The Shamrocks have some amazing football people behind the scenes. I’m lucky because i have a support structure that I can always count on to give me solid, honest opinions and that is priceless. Listening is a massive part of being a successful manager.”

Both Polonia teams are bottom of the respective divisions and reserves coach John Riordan stressed that his team would not be taking the opening game lightly (6pm).

Several key players miss out again, including Joey Aronovsky, Brendan Lane and Sean Steed while Larry Slaughter, who performed brilliantly in last Saturday’s 3-1 loss at Lansdowne has family commitments. However, goalkeeper Jesse Corke and target man Sean O’Neill return to the fold for a vital game in what is a tight division.

Joey Aronovsky (left) and Sean Steed both miss out this weekend due to injury.
Pictures by Dennis Schneidler

“I don’t really care where they are in the standings, we have to put together a full 90 minutes of effort and work on our own confidence,” pointed out Riordan.

“We showed glimpses of what we can do last weekend and it bodes well but we need to apply that more consistently and get back to winning ways.”

Meanwhile, Sunday will bring the second trip in a row for the Rocks to Lansdowne with the long-awaited Metro 1 clash of the derby rivals taking place at Tibbetts Brook Park at 9am.

Last Sunday’s 4-0 loss at home to NYFC Iliria brought a shuddering halt to what was a three-game winning streak in the league and player-assistant coach Neil Mannion called on his players to respond positively in what will be a hard fought battle.

“Halloween came early last weekend against Iliria,” said Mannion dryly. “But it’s time to show some bouncebackability in our first Irish derby. Derbies are only memorable if you win them so we’ll need to be bullin’ in the Bronx!”

Elsewhere, Partizani will host Paddy Mc Carry’s Over 30s at Randalls Island 74 at 4pm on Sunday, a game which pits second from top against second from bottom, both teams with mirror opposite records.

“We have been playing really well of late,” said Mc Carry. “We hope that continues Sunday because we almost have our strongest panel of the season to chose from. As usual, we will be going for all three points. Our goal remains to win all our of games from now until the winter break.”

It’s a late kick off for the Legends on Sunday who must wait until 8pm to head for Herbert Lehman High School to take on struggling Doxa who have yet to win a game this season.

Emmett Harvey’s men are confident after a ten-goal blitz of Hoboken but are down a couple of players this weekend as they bid to try and stay in touch with leaders Gjoa.

“On the back of two terrific wins we go into this game against Doxa with confidence,” said Harvey. Even though we are missing a few players through injury, we hope to get the right result!”

And in the Metro Women’s League, the Division B Shamrocks have the weekend off while the Division A leaders are at home to Fuel FC (St Michaels at 1pm).

Last week’s 2-1 win sent Paddy Geraghty’s charges three points clear of the team they beat that day, CPR White, and with Fuel having won just one game from six, the Rocks are keen to maintain that three-point gap at the top.

“This is our last league game of the fall,” said coach Paddy Geraghty.

“We played great last week but we need another win to consolidate first place. We are happy to add Denise Wilson to the squad and have Georgia Frost returning to bolster our attack.”
