Rocks Women pick off Appletown in dominant display

SHAMROCKS sunday schedule graphic (5)

The Shamrocks Women got their first victory of the season on the board in style, downing Appletown with a dominant 3-0 win in New Utrecht on Sunday.

Goals from new signings Brittany Meade, Sinead Hennessy and Jackie Gawne set up the big victory giving the management team of Erin Cullen, Tricia Reed and Paddy Geraghty a much needed boost to kickstart their season.

“We expected this performance was coming,” said player/co-manager Tricia Reed. “But it was great to see the new players gel so well with our squad and get a win early in the season. Everyone did really well and we can now look forward to our game next Sunday against Phoenix. We will keep working hard and we aim to make a big push.”

The winning Rocks – 3-0 victors over Appletown

“This team was started 14 months ago but today we arrived,” added coach Paddy Geraghty. “There is a buzz about the squad and good players want to come play for the club. The effort in training is starting to show and we’ll take some stopping now.”

Meanwhile on what was a bye week for our firsts and reserves, Shamrocks 1960 made it two wins from two in Metro 2, beating Eintracht 1-0 in a tough tussle that was decide by Dan Meola’s first half goal and some heroic goalkeeping from returning stalwart Robbie O’Neill.

“It was a tough game against a good young team,” said coach Andy Connolly.

“Robbie O’Neill’s performance between the posts certainly helped us over the line and these are the sort of wins that will stand to us. The goal was excellent and the defenders did well after that to keep us ahead.”

The Rocks 1960 team that beat Eintracht 1-0 on Sunday

With almost half an hour gone, Hughie McGowan showed great composure on the left, finding Meola who then chipped the ball beyond the Eintracht goalkeeper wit ha sublime half volley.

The 1960 team will take on NYC Afghanistan FC next Sunday with time and location to be determined.

A battling 2-2 draw for the Rocks Over 30s ensured a point gained after a depleted first 11 made the tough trip to Manhattan Celtic and came from behind twice to take a result back to Queens.

Tayfun Gokmen scored a stunning free for the second week in a row while Marcos Soto’s second half equalizer was an excellent finish from the right wing, a lob that pinged in off the back post.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the boys,” said caretaker manager John Riordan. “We were missing some key players but the lads stepped up and salvaged an excellent point.”

It will be another tough assingment at home next Sunday morning for Paddy Mc Carry’s men as they face Dinamo (who have merged with Westchester) at 8am, a repeat of last season’s league championship decider.

Earlier in the day, the Shamrocks Legends went down 5-1 at home to Cozmoz with Stevie Doyle scoring a first half consolation tap-in. Banatul SC form next Sunday’s opposition time and location to be determined.

Rocks 1960 & Over 30s bid to continue winning start

SHAMROCKS sunday schedule graphic (3)

With a bye-week being enjoyed by our firsts and reserves this weekend, it will be a slightly quieter Sunday for the club.

Notable, however, will be the home debuts of the Rocks Legends and Rocks 1960 who play Sunday morning at St Michael’s for the first time.

The curtain raiser will see Emmett Harvey’s Legends look to put their very unlucky defeat last week in the past when they face Cozmoz FC at 11am.

Harvey will have a much stronger squad available to him with the squad building process in full swing.

“We left it behind us last weekend,” said assistant coach Donal Kelly. “We’re very much looking ahead and the players know we have the potential of putting together a very good outfit.”

In the second game on Sunday, the fledgling 1960 team will face a tough task against SC Eintracht (1pm kick-off).

Eintracht emerged as 4-1 winners last week against NYC Afghanistan.

The Rocks 1960, coached by Andy Connolly, Neil Mannion and Colly Madden, snatched a late victory last week against fellow rookies Beyond FC and will look to build on that this weekend.

“We’re not getting carried away by that win,” said manager Andy Connolly. “SC Eintracht will be very strong and we’re still getting used to each other. But we showed great resolve to grind out the win so it bodes very well.”

In an around the same time in New Utrecht, the Shamrocks Women will be hoping to bounce back from a 3-1 loss last weekend when they face Appletown at 1.30pm.

“I was very impressed by our new players last Sunday,” said Erin Cullen. “We’re looking forward to them getting used to their new team mates and once they do, we will be able to put some good performances together.”

A late kick-off is on the cards for the Over 30s who must visit their arch-rivals Manhattan Celtic in Pier 40 (7.30pm).

The champions have been landed with a tough start to their title defense but enjoyed an impressive win last Sunday morning against Manhattan Kickers.

“Sunday night will be another very difficult game,” said Paddy Mc Carry. “Celtic always make it very hard to get any kind of result especially at their home field. They have a few quality players who can win games for them.”

Lastly, we would like to make our players and supporters aware that women’s team co-manager Erin will be taking part in a charity sleep out next week in aid of Covenant House.

Since 1972, Covenant House has been available to meet the immediate needs of young people, with a hot meal and a safe bed – and to help them further their education, get a job, find permanent housing. In essence, Covenant House helps these kids find and build a brighter future.

“I have decided to take on the challenge of sleeping outside with my peers from the (Re)Insurance industry,” explained Erin. “It will be uncomfortable. It will be dark. But for one night I can give up the comforts of home knowing that – by doing so – I can bring warmth and brightness to young people who need it most.”

Dream start for the Rocks

  • Chris Uy the match winner in upset of Greeks
  • Darren Coleman hat trick inspires reserves
  • Rocks 1960 grab late victory
  • Over 30s begin title defense with win
  • Six teams represent the Rocks on busy day

The Shamrocks returned to life in the top flight of the Cosmopolitan Soccer League with a well deserved 1-0 win over the Greek Americans at St Michaels on Sunday.

The NY Shamrocks team that won their First Division game 1-0 over the Greek Americans on Sunday at St Michael’s.

A late goal from Chris Uy sealed victory after a great pass down the right flank from Sean Doran found Joe Connolly who crossed low to Uy.
“Its a great win for the club today against the Greeks who are one of the top teams in the league,” said Grogan.

“It’s all about the club today and the great history. They are back were they belong and I’m just delighted to be involved. We won’t get carried away with the win though. We will start again on Tuesday in training prepping for the next challenge. Win lose or tie its always about the next game”

Meanwhile, in the curtain raiser, a hat trick from Darren Coleman got the reserves team off go the best possible start, a 5-3 victory in what was a very open and enjoyable contest.

Tipperary-born Coleman finished brilliantly from a Brendan Lane cross after five minutes and two minutes later, Leo Nizzi scored after being set up by Joe Zorbo.

Zorbo then set up Brendan Lane for the third, Lane striking his shot to the top corner from the edge of the box.

The Greeks struck back after a defensive mix up in the 17th minute and after that quick start, there wasn’t another goal until Coleman’s second in the 70th minute.

The visitors got it back to 4-3 with a quick brace but Coleman sealed the win late on.

The NY Shamrocks Reserves team that beat the Greek Americans 5-3 on Sunday

It was a perfect start to the day for the club when the league champion Over 30s begun their title defense with a 2-1 win over Manhattan Kickers Premier.

In their championship winning season, Kickers were the only team that managed to beat Paddy Mc Carry’s men so this was a tough proposition but not until the final five minutes did the visitors ever threaten the goal tended by new signing Jay Palmer.

The Over 30s team that overcame Manhattan Kickers at Randall’s Island on Sunday

Goals either half from Tayfun Gokmen – a spectacular free kick – and Shawn Baron, who was making his return to the Rocks.

Tayfun Gokmen’s first half free kick got the Rocks up and running

Making their debut in Metro 2, Shamrocks 1960 got off to a winning start with a 2-1 win over Beyond FC at Randall’s Island.

Ciaran Moloney scored in the first half and Dylan Wallace got the winner with ten minutes to go.

A Tyrone Kent hat trick was not enough to see the Legends (Over 36s) past Hoboken in their league debut in New Jersey.

3-2 up at half-time, the Rocks left it slip in the second half and went down 5-3.

The Shamrocks Women were unlucky to lose 3-1 against NY Skulls, Sinead Hennessy scoring the Rocks consolation.

Rocks ready for new era

  • Top division action returns for Shamrocks after ten-year absence
  • Rocks host Greek Americans on Sunday
  • Over 30s begin title defense with tough task
  • 1960 and Legends make their league debuts
  • Rocks Women add impressive new players

Midfield dynamo Sean Steed has been named as NY Shamrocks club captain ahead of the hotly anticipated return to the first division of the Cosmopolitan Soccer League.

Steed (pictured) said he was honored to be chosen by Kevin Grogan and was looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“All the players are ready after a very good pre-season,” Steed told NYShamrocksSC.com.

“We are looking forward to testing ourselves against very strong opposition and it doesn’t get much more difficult than facing the Greek Americans.”

Grogan also confirmed that newly signed defender Lee Toland will serve as vice-captain. Born in Derry, Toland is a former Newcastle United and Derry City player and has settled in extremely well since joining the club in July.

Grogan has been hard at work recruiting in new players with the likes of Sean Reilly, Laurie Child, Chuong Tran and Anthony Tagliaferri adding quality to the side while Brazilian Rafael Carpes will add much needed steel to the midfield.

But the head coach has also been keen to retain the players who got the Shamrocks promoted with last season’s top scorer Mohamed Fofana expected to lead the line again while the talented midfield trio of Michael McGreevy, Sean Doran and Santiago Rigby will be looking to avail of the higher standard of soccer.

“We are underdogs this season but we are giving ourselves the best chance possible to achieve success,” Grogan told NYShamrockSC.com.

“We have worked hard now for five weeks training, recruiting and playing five pre-season games. We have a good mix of new players and players from last year.

“The Greeks are one of the biggest clubs in the league so its a tough start but we will function and compete. Every game is a cup final for us. If we win a game we cant get carried away and if we lose we must move forward and bounce back. Every point will count.

“John Kenny obviously had a vison and founded the club in 1960. Here we are in 2015. It’s an amazing history. I’m honored to be involved and I fully understand the responsibility attached to my role in the club.”

Stevie Doyle will once again coach the reserves and has named Shane Moore as his skipper ahead of Sunday’s 11am kick off.

His side will be backboned by club stalwarts such as Nikle Guzijan, Mitch Jones, Brendan Lane and Paul McDaid while some of last year’s more impressive players were rewarded with a shot at the first division with keeper and player of the year Nick Meola joining Cathal Monaghan and Daniel Cano in the squad.

“I am very excited to get going this Sunday,” said Doyle. It has to be described as another great chapter in Shamrocks folklore.

“Players have been working extremely hard in preseason and we can’t wait to get started and get going. It’s a top quality league and with a squad of old players and new players this year, we will be hoping to turn a few heads this year.”

Meanwhile, Paddy Mc Carry’s Over 30s league champions will begin their title defense Sunday with a tough task against Manhattan Kickers Premier at Randall’s Island Field 75 (8am).

“It won’t be an easy way to get going,” admitted Mc Carry, “but we have retained a lot of our squad and we have added some good new players. We’ll be the ones every other team wants to beat so we will be ready for that.”

It will be a big day for the new teams at the club, meanwhile, with Shamrocks Legends and Shamrocks 1960 lining out for their first league games.

The Legends, led by coaches Emmett Harvey, Donal ‘Ducky’ Kelly and Eoin Sweeney will be at Hoboken at 3pm on Sunday. Randall Friedman returns to the club as captain with Kelly named as his vice-captain.

Dave Harvey will captain the 1960 team which will be coached by Andy Connolly, Neil Mannion and Colly Madden while Ruairi Lavery is named as vice-captain.

Fellow new arrivals Beyond FC will host the Rocks at Randall’s Island Field 75 (4pm).

In the Women’s Metro League, the Rocks Women will take on NY Skulls in New Utrecht at 1.30pm with some impressive new additions.

“It’s an exciting time for the women’s team,” said player-manager Erin Cullen.

“The roster is quite different from last year in that we have nearly 10 new players joining the team, as well as some very strong players returning from last season. We’ve been practicing throughout the summer and we’re hoping that this new lineup will present a stronger team dynamic on the pitch.”

Schedule released for new season

The Shamrocks will return to life in the top division of the Cosmopolitan Soccer League with two home games in a row this month, kicking off the new campaign against NY Greek Americans at St Michaels on Sunday September 13 at 1pm.

Kevin Grogan’s men will then face United FC at the end of the month after an early bye week in the initial ten-game schedule.

“As expected, it’s an extremely tough schedule,” Grogan told NYShamrockSC.com. “But we will take it one game at a time and treat every game like a cup final.”

After the late withdrawal of Croatia, the 11 Division 1 teams will play each other once. The league will then be split into the top six and bottom five and a six game schedule will be worked out according to the rankings after the first ten games.

Shamrocks will face last season’s title rivals Polonia at the start of October before two big home games against Westchester Eagles and CPR Whites.

The Shamrocks must wait until late November before facing into the hotly anticipated Irish derbies against Manhattan Celtic and two-time league champions Lansdowne Bhoys, both games away from home on Saturday evenings, November 21 and December 12 respectively.

Successful day at Sunnyside Gardens as Over 30s lift King McCormack Cup

The annual NY Shamrocks Sunnyside Gardens Six-Aside was held at the famous old venue this past Sunday – a perfect way to tee up the exciting new season ahead.

Going back all the way to the first event in 1987, this get together has always proved a hit with Shamrocks new and old. Players and families started to gather from 10am at the beautiful venue as a perfectly sunny day began to take shape.

Eight teams assembled, ready for a tough series games and all with ambitions of lifting the King McCormack Memorial Cup.

The first game of the day was a sign of things to come with Paddy Mc Carry and Keith Buckley’s Courtyard Ale House backed Over 30s rattling off a 3-0 win over their eventual opponents in the final, the Eltin Colman managed Alumni Grey, sponsored by GTI and Steve Doran (pictured below).

With new first team coach Kevin Grogan in attendance, he would have been pleased to see the performance of two very young Shamrocks who were lining out for Alumni Grey – goalkeeper Eoin Motherway and Eamonn Doran, both teenagers and both potential Rocks of the future.

The newly formed Shamrocks 1960 team came roaring out of the blocks with a thrilling come-from-behind 2-1 win over Stevie Doyle’s reserves and the next game saw another debut with the Shamrocks Legends (our new Over 36s team) drawing 0-0 with Eoin Sweeney’s Alumni Greyer.

The Over 30s would go onto dominate Group 1 and advanced to the semi-final alongside Alumni Grey, whose talented team showed their true grit in wins over the Legends and Alumni Greyer.

Meanwhile in Group 2, Rocks 1960 marched through to the semis while Station turned things around and benefited from the final group game of the day, a reserves 2-0 win over Bar 43 which denied the latter side.

In amongst it all was the highlight of the day – the traditional kiddies race which proved to be a stunning display of athleticism and fun. Every kid a winner!

The first semi-final of the day ended in a dramatic penalty shoot out after Rocks 1960 and Alumni Grey were inseparable after extra-time. Alumni Grey advanced to set up a final showdown with the Over 30s who were clinical in their victory over Station.

The final was a worthy ending to a great day of football. Once again the Over 30s took the lead over their opponents, opening out a 2-0 gap before the Alumni rallied back to 2-1, setting up a thrilling finale. The Over 30s held on for the win and club president Sean Mc Mullan handed the King McCormack Memorial Trophy over to player-manager Keith Buckley (see below).

Grogan makes Toland his first Rocks signing

  • Former Newcastle United and Derry City player ready for Rocks challenge
  • Galasso Trucking returns as Shamrocks sponsor

NY Shamrocks Technical Director Kevin Grogan welcomed his first new signing to the club this week, securing Lee-Ryan Toland in what will be seen as a huge boost five weeks out from the new season.

In what has proven to be a busy week for the club with pre-season training getting underway, the Shamrocks were further boosted by Galasso Trucking’s decision to once again support the club as a primary sponsor.

Lee Tolen

Toland (pictured above with Grogan during the week) said he was looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“It will be tough in Division 1 but Kevin is building a nice team here and I am delighted to be a part of it,” Toland told NYShamrockSC.com.

21-year-old Toland began his soccer career in Derry with his local club Don Boscos before English side Portsmouth brought him across the Irish Sea.

He impressed enough that Premier League side Newcastle United signed him July 2010, making his debut with the Newcastle Reserves two weeks later in a 2-1 win against Bristol City.

After three years at Newcastle, he failed to make the break into the first team and made the return home to play for Finn Harps in the Airtricity First Division before becoming one of a few former Harps players to follow ex-boss Peter Hutton to Derry City in 2014.

Lee, a former Northern Ireland youth international, is a left-sided full-back who loves getting forward but also enjoys defending and is comfortable at centre back as well.

“Lee’s decision to join the Rocks is an important first step,” said Grogan.

“He has settled in brilliantly and he has a great presence. It bodes well for the weeks ahead as we look to build a team for Division 1 soccer.”

Kevin Grogan joins Shamrocks as technical director

The New York Shamrocks are proud to announce the addition of former Manchester United and Ireland youth player Kevin Grogan as technical director.

Kevin Grogan Pic

Newly promoted to the Cosmopolitan Soccer League Division 1, the Queens based soccer club will return to the top tier of the amateur game in New York for the first time in a decade.

And the Dubliner says he is looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“I am honored to take on the role of technical director at the New York Shamrocks,” Grogan said this week.

“This is a club with a very proud tradition stretching back to the 1960s and ever since I moved to this country to coach full time, I have been observing the Rocks closely in the hope that they would return to the level where they belong.

“I have to pay tribute to Glen Wrafter for achieving promotion to the first division which is no easy feat and he has provided a very solid foundation to build on. He assembled a talented squad which ran Polonia to the wire.

“I want to thank the committee for making this a reality and I look forward to working with the players as we begin the hard work ahead.”

Grogan added that how the Shamrocks players approach life in the first division will be important.

“I will place demands on the players but that is what’s required if they want to maintain there status in the top division and build for the future. It’s not just about what happens on the pitch but also how these players live off the pitch. It’s a lifestyle. It’s a full-time job for them now with diet, rest, training and games. They all need to find the intrinsic motivation.

“I am very much aware of the magnitude of being associated with this great club and i take the responsibility extremely seriously. The relationship with the club and players will grow naturally but they will see my enthusiasm and intensity as we move forward.”

The Shamrocks reserves coach Stevie Doyle will return to the role for a third season and will also assist Grogan with first team duties. Doyle guided the reserves to victory in the Saunders Cup and also had his team challenging for league honors, falling just short against NYPD.

“Stevie has a lot of quality attributes to be a successful manager at multiple levels. I really look forward to working closely with him to build the on-field brand and culture.”

Club president Sean Mc Mullan said the appointment of the Queens based coaching pro was a sign of the ambition of the club.

“We’re delighted that Kevin believes in what we are doing at the Shamrocks,” said Mc Mullan.

“It is a huge step up for the first team as well as the reserves and Kevin gives us a chance to put in place a solid set up. No one is in any doubt about the challenge he faces but we all appreciate a challenge and we will give him as much support as possible to carry that out.”

Mc Mullan thanked Glen Wrafter for his service as first team coach.

“Glen has been outstanding since he took over the role five years ago. Not only did he bring us back to the first division, he has brought this club on leaps and bounds across the board and he is a true Rock.

“His work commitments take priority now but we will always be able to call on him as we continue to grow as a club.”

Kevin Grogan has spent the past four years developing young footballers in the US after injury forced him to retire from a promising professional career in England.

He signed full-time for Manchester United in 1997 having impressed at schoolboy level for Belvedere.

The following summer, he joined the likes of John O’Shea, Andy Reid and Liam Miller as part of Brian Kerr’s famous Ireland U16s squad which claimed an unprecedented victory at the European Championships in Scotland — beating Italy 2-1 in the final.

Before his career in England could even get off the ground, however, Grogan was plagued by chronic pelvic injuries. He departed United in 2000 and returned to Ireland for a spell with UCD.

Injury once again cut short an opportunity at Millwall and his remaining playing days were spent at Bray Wanderers, St Patrick’s Athletic and Glentoran.

With the help of Alex Ferguson and others, he has developed a successful career in soccer coaching and development.

He focuses on elite performance seminars, club consultations and team camps, among other aspects.

“I learned a lot from (Alex Ferguson’s) values, not just in soccer but in life in terms of workrate and discipline. When you’re young, you don’t realize you have learned those things but now that I’m older and can look back, it has been instilled in all the young Manchester United players. That has definitely helped me in my career.”

Celebratory mood at Shamrocks AGM

The New York Shamrocks Soccer Club AGM was held in the Courtyard Ale House in Sunnyside on Sunday.

With trophies on display and four players of the year being honored for their performances this season, the mood was celebratory but there was also a determination to expand on this season’s success.

Promotion to the first division of the Cosmopolitan Soccer League will be a major challenge for the club but one that must be embraced after a ten-year absence, pointed out club president Sean Mc Mullan who was unanimously re-elected for a third successive season.

Outgoing first team coach Glen Wrafter paid tribute to the hard work done all season beginning with a highly successful Sunnyside Gardens six-aside tournament back in August which was won by the Shamrocks Alumni.

Fundraising was a success thanks to the hard work of committee members and the energy of the Shamrocks membership and the club will be looking to build on that with its third annual golf outing in September.

Sponsorship was also increased thanks to the continued support of GTI Trucking, the Courtyard Ale House and Radeberger as well as the addtion of Crana Electric, New Wave and Andrew James Interiors. Special thanks was given to long time Shamrock Johner Guildea who personally contributed to expenses associated with referee payments.

The highlights of the year were of course the first team securing promotion to CSL Division I while the reserves were joint top of their division, missing out on head-to-head but garnering some measure of consolation via their Saunders Cup victory.

The Over 30s won the CSL Division I – Paddy McCarry’s second league title in three seasons.

“Paddy set the blueprint for the club in 2012 with the other teams drawing from his success,” said Wrafter. “To repeat that success three seasons later is a fantastic achievement.”

One of the amazing achievements of the year, however, was the addition of a women’s team whose Inaugural season was completed with good results coming towards the end of the season which should bode well for next season.

Players of the year awards were also handed out to Mo Fofana (first team), Nick Meola (reserves), Alex Berne (Over 30s) and Megan Hare (women’s team).
