The Over 30s moved one step closer to securing top spot in the division with Sunday’s battling 2-1 win over Barnstonworth Old Boys at Randall’s Island.
Top scorer Sean Riley scored 20 minutes into the first half before a second half own goal sealed the victory prior to the concession of a late Barnstonworth penalty.
Second placed Dinamo’s draw late Sunday night leaves the Rocks needing just a draw to seal first and a top seed in the play-offs. Dinamo will be the opponents next Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Shamrocks Reserves title hopes received a setback after a 3-2 loss at Iberia on Saturday night.
Stevie Doyle’s charges were 2-0 up at half time through goals from Cathal Monaghan and Paul McDaid but a spirited Iberia fightback was the undoing of the Rocks.
A league tie being played out at the same time saw NYPD Reserves gain ground on the Shamrocks after a 3-2 win at Japan, narrowing the gap to three points.
Meanwhile the reserves’ next opponents Polonia were 2-1 winners at the Ukrainians making this Sunday’s game at McCarren Park all the more vital ahead of the May 3 showdown at home to NYPD.
The first team did not play due to floodlight failure and drop out of top spot after Polonia won 3-1 making their 10am clash on Sunday morning at McCarren Park the game of the week in Division 2.
Meanwhile, Shamrocks Women drew 2-2 in East River Park, unlucky not to secure the victory.
