The unbeaten Shamrocks first team advanced to the second round of the Flamhaft Cup thanks to a tense penalty shoot-out victory over Ossining Portuguese of the Eastern District League.
Rocks dominated possession in the first half at Randall’s Island and should have been ahead when captain Sean Steed struck the crossbar from 30 yards and Sean Riley shot wide from the rebound.
Antonio Rebello put the Rocks in front after 50 mins. following some neat build-up play by Mike Stone.
Ossining took over from that point and got a deserved equalizer after 75 mins.
The game was then decided by a lengthy penalty shoot out in which Steed, center back Rob Gaynor, full back Mitch Jones, central midfielder Kyler Scheid, sub Paul McDaid and Sean Riley all scored, Ruley clinching it in sudden death having saved the Portuguese attempt.
Meanwhile, on Saturday night, the reserves beat Doxa 4-0 on Saturday night in the D’Arpino Cup at Roosevelt Island.
A Dave Harvey hat trick stole the show, the third from a free kick, while Pól O’Kane scored the opener with a lovely finish.
There were sterling performances from captain Keith Cagney and Michael McGreevey in the center of midfield.
It’s back to league action this Saturday night for both teams with Flank United hosting the Rocks at Randall’s Island (6pm & 8pm).
The Over 30s were knocked out of the Marth Cup at home early on Sunday by Megas Alexandros, captain Eugene O’Driscoll’s penalty cancelled out in the first half before the visitors took a second half lead all the way to the finish.
